Rdio’s totally redesigned browser and desktop app interface made what was already basically the best-organised streaming service even cleaner. Ostensibly, it puts albums artists and songs first, but really it’s putting you and your experience at the top of its priorities list. Now it’s available to everyone.
Facebook has taken a leaf out of MySpace’s book. Now, on every musician’s Facebook page, there’s a “Listen” button that immediately takes you to their music in your streaming app of choice — Mog, Rdio or one of a few others. Neat. [TechCrunch]
Rdio, the music subscription service from Skype and Kazaa co-founders Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom, announced major changes to its music subscription service designed to “put music and people front and centre,” in an effort to evolve past what it calls the “boring” “spreadsheet” approach of some other music services.
2012 is going to be a landmark year for streaming music services in Australia. We’ve already got Rdio, JB Hi-Fi, Samsung Music Hub and Music Unlimited, and from early next week we’ll have details on the big fish in the streaming pond: Spotify.
Streaming-music-service-slash-social-network Rdio’s new Android app is pretty damn excellent. In addition to support for Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0), the app now includes Network Activity, User Profiles, New Releases, Album Charts and recommendations based on listening habits. If you’ve had a chance to check out the iOS version of Rdio, you’ll know that the Android version has been lagging.
Last week we saw that Rdio had quietly started accepting Aussie dollars when offering its monthly music subscription service – now it’s started shouting its availability to the rooftops.
Well, we knew Rdio music streaming was planning on launching in Australia in early 2012, but I don’t think any of us expected it to be this early. While there’s no official announcement anywhere to be seen, tipster Nick pointed out that the site is no longer geo-blocking Australian IP addresses and is offering prices in Aussie Dollars.
Music distributor STHoldings just pulled its collection of more than 200 record labels off subscription music services. Like, all of them. Quoting one label, “Let’s keep the music special, f**k Spotify.” What do those fighting words mean for us?
