John Carmack says that not one, but three Quake games are coming to the iPhone—1, 2, and Arena—though his involvement will mostly be to “make sure certain specific things are done the way I want them to be.”

The Quake onslaught is in addition to a slew of other id games hitting iPhone: Wolfenstein RPG, Doom 2 RPG and Doom Classic. Interestingly, why he’ll be farming out most of the port work, Carmack says he’s personally interested in working on some of the stuff made possible by the iPhone 3GS’s more advanced hardware: “I certainly want to do this MegaTexture demo for the 3GS stuff, work on that myself.”

While there’s 40 million current-gen iPhone OS devices out there, I’m totally ready for developers to ditch them so we can see what’s really possible on the platform. [Shacknews]

This black magic was concocted by a chumby developer who got the game running under SDL. Obviously, chumby doesn’t have a WASD key layout, so he chopped up the controls, with the accelerometer handling all the event, the bend switch acting as your trigger, and the touchscreen itself jumps and activates items.

The game is surprisingly playable too, with a pretty respectable frame rate for a bean bag. [bunnie's blog via MAKE]

Sure, you might get the occasional reference to N-Gage, or Brickbreaker might get an update, but that’s about it, right? Wrong. As of today, if you’re the proud owner of a Nokia N95 8GB, N82 or E90 handset, you can now play Quake 3 Arena on your mobile, with full multiplayer.

Of course, playing a full-blown FPS with a phone’s awkward, packed keypad isn’t exactly appealing, so the ported game as full Bluetooth keyboard and mouse support. Just forget for a moment what playing a game with a full keyboard and mouse while watching your phone’s tiny screen would be like for a second and consider that this is actually a triumph for modern handsets. The fact that we can play a game that required top-of-the-line hardware a decade ago on our mobile phones is newsworthy just in itself.

If you own one of the three compatible phones and want to get your Quake 3 Arena action on, click the link below and follow the instructions. Just remember though – you’ll need to own a copy of the game for this to work.
