There are 25,000 PS3’s available—a few less than last time—but really, all we really care about is expensive stuff smashing into each other.

There are some stats from the “experiment”, which should satisfy the mathematicians amongst you:

Fast facts on the crash test:
· PS3 Trajectory: Parabolic
· Impact Speed: 80km/hr = 22m/sec
· Mass of PS3: 3.2kg
· Kinetic energy of PS3 at point of impact: 774.4 joules
· PS3 deceleration: 246.9g = 2420 m/sec squared
· Force of PS3 on BRAVIA TV screen: 7744.0 newtons = 790.2kg force
· Sled deceleration: 40.0g = 392m/sec squared
· Force on sled: 470400.0newtons, 48000kg force = 48 tonnes force
· One 25kg metal bar stops the sled at the end of the track. A new bar is needed for every test
· Track speed: 80km
· Launch angle: 5 degrees
· Sled weight: 1.2 tonnes
· Track length: 60 metres, speed reaches 80km at 1 metre before impact
· Length PS3 travels when released: 3.19metres
· BRAVIA TV is mounted 2 metres from wall

Microsoft Australia have partnered with the Nova radio network to leverage the <del datetime="2009-06-09T05:54:26+00:00">huge success of the</del> Laptop Hunter ads they’ve been pushng for the last couple of months. The end result is that they’re giving away $1300 each day to someone in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne to buy a new PC.

Rather than an ad campaign, this is more a promotion, so instead of just being given the cash, you need to find the “laptop hunter” by following clues given on Nova’s breakfast radio program. It’s happening in Sydney and Melbourne this week, ending on Friday June 12, while Brisbane’s version runs all next week.

Considering just how geeky you guys all are (in a good way) I can’t see $1,300 going far enough to get you the kind of PC (or Mac) you’d be happy buying. Still, once you sell that $1,300 PC on eBay, you’ll be most of the way towards getting a laptop you might actually find practical.

Based on the successful PC Hunter campaign in the United States, people in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane will have the opportunity to score A$1300 to buy a new Windows Laptop. The challenge requires participants to follow clues to locate the ‘Laptop Hunter’ – who guards the cash while blending into the busy CBD crowd – before embarking on a quest to find the best high performance Laptop their newly acquired money can buy.

The campaign starts in Sydney and Melbourne today and runs until Friday 12 June, with one person winning cash to buy a new Windows Laptop each day in each centre. Brisbane’s competition will run next week from Tuesday 16 June to Friday 20 June, with one person winning cash to buy a new Windows Laptop each day.

Clues on how to find the ‘Laptop Hunter’ will be broadcast during the Nova breakfast program at around 8.30am each morning of the campaign. Clues will also be distributed via Windows Instant Messenger, Twitter and email.

Microsoft’s ‘Laptop Hunter’ partnership with Nova is part of a wider communication initiative to share with Australian consumers the excellent value and performance of Windows PCs.

Remember the otherweek when we told you that Virgin Blue were teasing the idea that they were giving away a trip on Virgin Galactic? Well they are. Or, to be more precise, they’re giving away 25 million Velocity frequent flyer points, which is enough to claim your place on a trip to space. To go in the running to win the 25 million points, you need to start acquiring Velocity points – every point gained gives you one entry to try and win the prize. They’ve tried to further entice you by getting the banks to give away 25% more points on Velocity rewards cards as well.

There’s also some other prizes on offer for those who don’t like the idea of becoming a space monkey, like a pair of Alfa Romeos, a $150,000 holiday wherever you want or a $170,000 shopping spree. But seriously, who would choose any of these over the chance to become one of the few elite people to have travelled into space?

The promotion will be running until the end of June, and is only open to Australian Velocity members, which fortunately narrows the potential winners. Now all I have to do is find a way to “take care of” all the other potential winners to guarantee my victory… Anybody want to help me out?

Now that rollercoaster ride is coming to Australia.

If you purchase an OLPC laptop, you’ll also be donating another unit to a child in need in outback Australia or the Pacific Islands. According to the website, this deal kicks off on November 30 and will only run until December 31, so get your orders in sooner rather than later.

For some reason, the OLPC is still priced in US dollars, with GST chucked on top of that, which is a kind of dodgy way of doing it, if you ask me. Still considering they’re actually making an effort to try and chance the world one laptop at a time, I suppose we can forgive them.

You can order your OLPC at Laptop.org for $US399 plus GST from November 30.

They seem to be completely ignoring, you know, gamers, and going for a generation of older, non-gaming people. I mean, I know the Wii is fun for all ages, but who knows how much cash must have changed hands for radio station 2UE to actually change their name to 2U-Wii for three weeks. It’s not just a gimmick either – their website has been overrun with the new 2U-Wii logo and the radio DJs are presented as Miis pretty much everywhere except for photos online.

The worst part is that they’re actually giving away $20K worth of Nintendo gear. Even though the Wii gets older people to play games, do they ever pull it out once the initial enjoyment of Wii Sports has worn off? No. Of course, neither do most of us, I guess, so my argument seems to have a glaring hole in it.

Sony Australia unveils blockbuster Quantum of Solace consumer promotion
Win one of seven world-class Bond-style adventures
Sydney – 27 October, 2008 – To celebrate the return of the world’s most enduring secret agent, Sony Australia has unveiled a blockbuster consumer promotion. For every $50 spent on participating Sony products, consumers will have the opportunity to win one of seven world-class Bond-style adventures.

“James Bond epitomises sophistication, quality and international appeal, which is a perfect fit with the Sony brand,” said Toby Barbour, Head of Strategy and Brand Development, Sony Australia.

“Sony Australia is combining technological innovation with entertainment content to deliver the energy and intensity of Bond like no other. From the latest XBR series Full HD BRAVIA LCD TVs with RGB Backlight LED, to our new Blu-ray players with BD-Live functionality, Sony’s leadership in high definition combines with one of the world’s most powerful movie franchises,” said Barbour.

The promotion started on 27 October 2008 with daily draws over 62 days. In addition, thousands of daily prizes, including PLAYSTATION®3 consoles, 007 DVD Box sets, Adrenalin vouchers, Greater Union double-movie passes and BigPond Music download credit will be awarded. As an additional incentive, on selected Sony products, a range of exclusive gifts with purchase will also be offered.

Ross Fielding, Executive Director, Telstra Product Management said the integration of Telstra mobile code technology boosted the competition’s interactivity.

“This is one of the first examples of a major brand harnessing Telstra’s new mobile code technology, which is available free on a growing selection of Next G™ mobile phones. Using the Telstra Code Reader customers can easily scan QUANTUM codes featured on competition advertising to double their chances of winning Sony prizes. It’s an exciting response mechanism that bridges the traditional and emerging mobile advertising worlds to immediately connect consumers with campaign content,” Ross said.

The seven main prizes, worth up to $30,000 each, include:

UK Bond Adventure
Visit the Beaulieu Car Museum in Hampshire (formerly MI6 Headquarters). Take an extreme ride along the Thames in a jet boat and enjoy dinner at the famous Rules restaurant, before suiting up in style at one of London’s famous Saville Row tailors.

For a double chance of winning, scan the associated QR Code on your mobile phone. Click the link on the mobile site home page to receive a unique code via SMS. For consumers who cannot scan the QR code, an SMS mechanism will also be available to unlock the password. Simply SMS the word ‘CODE’ to 1999BOND to receive an SMS back with a unique code. Consumers can then enter this unique code online to receive double the entries in the daily prize draws when purchasing Sony products.*

About QR Codes
QR (or ‘Quick Response’) Codes are a new type of barcode designed to be read by mobile phones. Compatible 3G phones equipped with a camera and the correct reader software can scan these codes, revealing an interactive multimedia experience or redirecting the viewer’s phone to a URL.

Sony’s partnership with Telstra gives Next G™ network customers a seamless competition experience in more places. Next G™ customers with compatible handsets need only launch Telstra’s pre-installed Telstra Code Reader from their My Place phone menu and point their mobile phone cameras at competition codes to access video-rich clues for free.**

Telstra Mobile Codes were launched in July and already more than 1 million Australians have the free barcode reading software installed on their Next G™ mobile phones.

Quantum of Solace
Quantum of Solace continues the high-octane adventures of James Bond in Casino Royale. Principal photography began on 7 January 2008. The film was produced for EON Productions by Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, directed by Marc Forster and stars Daniel Craig as the legendary secret agent, James Bond. The screenplay was written by Oscar® winner Paul Haggis (Crash, Casino Royale), Neal Purvis and Robert Wade. The release date only at the movies for Quantum of Solace will be Wednesday 19 November.
*This is a free service for Telstra, Vodafone and 3 customers; however charges will apply for Optus mobile customers.

** Video clues are also available free to mobile phone users on the Vodafone and 3 networks.
