Belkin Launches New Powerline Networking Hub
3:30PM Matt Hickey | Your house is wired for networking and you probably don’t even know it. Wires are wires, and the ones that give you power outlets every six feet aren’t much differen than the ones connecting your modem to your network. They’re already in the walls and can carry data as well as power, so think about using this Belkin Ethernet-to-powerline conversion hub to let you utilise the wiring you already have, converting the digital signals from up to three devices and transferring it through your house via a “powernet” to other devices. Networks
3:37PM Nick Broughall | Okay, we’re not saying that wireless technology gives you tumors. The jury’s still out on that one. What we are saying is that rather than go through the painful process of setting up a wireless network to stream you’re Hi-Def porn collection illegally bittorrented home movies (the only legal type in Australia, really) from your PC to your TV, why not try streaming it through the powerlines?
The Billion BiPAC 2070 (sounds like an evil robot from the future) is a 200Mbps Ethernet over power plug that lets you stream content through the copper in the walls rather than the air. Because it’s so fast, there’s no need to worry about buffer streams or interference like you would with a wireless router.
You get two HomePlugs in a box for $229, which automatically creates an extended network. Grab a couple more for different rooms of your house and anybody can log onto your new super fast ADSL2+ network as well.
Of course, to stream your video, you’ll still need a separate box, like an Apple TV or a Netgear EVA8000. But as far as setting up a home networks go, this sounds about as easy as plugging in a powerpoint. Stay tuned for a review in the coming weeks.

DirecTV Offering Powerline Broadband/VOIP
10:59PM Mark Wilson | We (ok, I) always thought that sending broadband over powerlines was one of those empty threats used to gain leverage on cable and DSL providers. But DirecTV has just announced a partnership with Current Group to provide their Dallas/Fort Worth market with high speed Internet through their wall sockets. The resulting BPL (Broadband Over Powerline) should be a lot faster than DSL, with theoretical transmission rates hitting between 256k/s and 2.7 MB/s. 1.8 million subscribers will get to find out starting late 2007 and into 2008. Now let’s get the gas lines going, too. Maybe the power companies will stop bill-raping us if they’re making a bit more on their lines…nah! [cnnmoney] More »
