Samsung S3 Uses LEDs to Get Your Attention

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 9:00 AM on August 8, 2008

Samsung are one of the few companies outside of Apple who really take their MP3 players seriously. That's why their S3 looks like such a promising little music player.

The guys from the US had a look at the S3 back in April, but Samsung has just announced that they're releasing it in Australia. That means we get an MP3 player that will play back MP3, WMA, OGG, MPEG4, JPG and TXT files, will let you drag and drop files onto the device, and comes in a range of colours (pink, white, blue and black) and capacities (up to 8GB). It also uses LEDs to light up the controls, which looks cool, as you can see from the picture.

The pricing's a bit weird though: $129 for 2GB, $149 for 4GB and $209 for 8GB. I mean, who's going to opt for just 2GB when an extra 20 bucks gets you double the storage? Hopefully nobody reading this, that's for sure...

First iRiver Spinn PMP Impressions (Verdict: Lovin' It)

Posted by Sean Fallon at 6:20 AM on August 8, 2008

The guys over at Crave UK got their hands on the new iRiver Spinn PMP, and although they have not conducted a full review yet, their initial impressions were positive. They love the 3.2-inch AMOLED screen saying that "Images are stunning; videos are smooth and sharp." They also found the sound quality to be superb and the menus to be effective--although it may be a little too touch sensitive and the scroll wheel can be awkward at times. As far as PMPs go, the Spinn is pretty feature rich (and it is pretty damn good looking to boot). Let's hope that the love-in continues when the final verdict is handed down . [Crave]

RAmos iMovie T8 offers 32GB on the Cheap

Posted by Mark Wilson at 10:57 PM on August 7, 2008

We're always on the prowl for the latest iClone, and this RAmos iMovie is looking like an...interesting...replacement for the iPod touch. Featuring a slim 10mm aluminum-magnesium frame, the T8 doesn't seem to have multitouch, but it will play back RMVB, AVI, FLV, WMV, MPG, MP4, DAT, and 3GP on its 4.3" WQVGA (480×272) display (or through built-in TV-out). And with the 32GB version costing just US$219, you know you're tempted to find out how well this thing would actually work. [Zol via PMPToday]

Garmin Opens Shop In Australia

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 9:13 AM on August 7, 2008

garmin logo.jpg

A spot of industry news for you on a Thursday morning: Garmin - whose products were previously distributed in Australia by GME - has opened up shop in Australia.

Why is this important, you ask? Well, it means that there's a good chance we'll see Garmin's range of GPS devices arrive on our shores quicker and cheaper than before. Plus, they're likely to release more of their products over here, so hopefully you can expect to see things like the Astro GPS dog-collar on store shelves in the near future. And with the nuvifone set to come out next year, having the parent company on our shores greatly increases the chances that we won't have to wait for years to get it ourselves...

Zvue's Custom Elvis Theme PMP Comes with Pre-Loaded Presley Vids

Posted by Kit Eaton at 8:56 PM on August 6, 2008

Screw the Journey-themed PMP, this custom Zvue player has real music aboard: from Mr Presley himself. Ten video clips to be precise, and Elvis's signature and photo engraved on the back shell. Part of Zvue's Premier Artists Series, it's got 1GB (expandable to 5GB with microSD,) a 2.4-inch colour TFT screen, FM tuner, voice recorder and will cost about US$50 when it's out August 12th in Wal-mart. Uh huh huh. [TFTS]

Mio Launching Flavoured Milk? New Moov Satnav Range

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 11:12 AM on August 6, 2008

Moov370_side.jpg

Mio has come out all guns blazing with the release of three new satnavsfor the Australian market. They all look exactly like the Moov 380 we saw from the US back in June, although none of these local models have a built-in SIM card slot to let you make calls from the device.

All the new models are using Navteq maps, which (I believe) is a first for a dedicated device in Australia (I'm sure you'll let me know if I'm wrong). There's also a cool tech called instant GPS fix, which recalibrates the expected position of the satellites in the sky every three days to get your position quicker. Plus, each of the new models has a 2 year warranty.

The entry level Moov 300, which will have an RRP of $349, has a large, 4.3-inch widescreen display. They've rejigged the interface as well, so you get large icons (like TomTom and Garmin devices). There's text to speech (so it reads out street names for you), which is a nice addition to an entry level unit.

But it's the mid and high-range units that make the new Moov range interesting.

Asus R710 GPS with Head-Up Display Demoed on Video

Posted by Kit Eaton at 12:00 AM on August 5, 2008

This is some video of Asus' swanky new GPS model that projects data onto your windshield, saving you from distracting yourself from the road by peering at a device screen. So will the R710 make you feel like you're flying a fighter aircraft with glitzy HUD graphics? No, not really, as it projects just some very basic info, like distance to next turn and which direction you're going in. But if it prevents accidents, and makes navigating across tricky junctions a little easier since you won't have to move your eyes from the road, seems like a great idea to me. [Navigadget]

iRiver Spinn Controller and UI Caught on VIdeo: Sleek, But Confusing

Posted by Kit Eaton at 9:47 PM on August 4, 2008

We've talked a few times about iRiver's Spinn PMP with its revolutionary controller, and now its UI has been captured on camera. Check out the radio-dial-like menu selection system, which looks pretty sleek and shiny. You dial through/click the menus with the feature wheel on the unit. Or by jabbing at the touchscreen. Hmm.... so the purpose of the big wheel is as an additional control that doesn't offer the flexibility of touchscreen controls? It's a little confusing: as is the UI itself, to my eyes at least. Sneak Peek: Lenovo's Upcoming Low-Cost Ultraportable?

Posted by Jack Loftus at 11:00 AM on August 4, 2008

Liliputing links to a video this evening of what they describe as a first look of Lenovo's upcoming low-cost ultraportable laptop. The video's creator said he shot the video at an "electronics holiday preview show in New York a few weeks ago." These mystery Lenovo laptops will purportedly come in 8.9 inch and 10.1 inch screen sizes with a 160GB hard drive, for a US$400 to US$600 price point. Due date? September, possibly, and not a boring black case in sight. [Liliputing]

Bring Romantic Business Time Anywhere with Portable Conmoto Suitcase Fireplace

Posted by Jack Loftus at 6:00 AM on August 4, 2008

Fireplaces are great for ambiance, but generally not portable. Kooky German design firm Conmoto, who brought us the bookshelf fireplace back in December, has solved the portable problem with the Travelmate Portable Fireplace. At 25kg it will require a little effort to cart it from room to room, but we think the resulting night of intimacy, wherever it happens to be, will be well worth the strained back.
