Sony Joins The Digital Photo Frame Brigade

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 8:23 AM on July 23, 2008

Here at Giz, there's a general feeling of acute loathing towards digital photo frames. They're expensive, they suck up energy unnecessarily (which is especially important in this age of environmental awareness) and for the most part, screen quality is crappier than a cheap, Chinese mobile phone. So when Sony announces that they're releasing a new photo frame of the digital variety, we don't break out the champers and start jumping for joy.

Of course, that doesn't mean that some of you won't be interested in this, so we're going to fight through our cynicism (a little bit, anyway) and tell you what you can expect for your 250 dollars:

US$840 32-inch Digital Photo Frame is Complete Idiot Bait

Posted by Adam Frucci at 12:15 AM on June 25, 2008

News flash, guys: a 32-inch Digital Photo Frame is actually a really crappy HDTV with all the tuners and inputs pulled out of it. It is not a photo frame. Selling it as such is a way to use the products weaknesses as its selling point and to remove money from the wallets of the rich and stupid. Seriously, this thing costs more than many fully-functional HDTVs of the same size. Urge to kill... rising...

3.5-Inch Digital Photo Frame from HP Small but Chic

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 9:45 PM on June 11, 2008

There's been a slew of Hewlett Packard products over the past few days and, although this digital picture frame is probably the smallest of the bunch, it's pretty damn cute. Available in Europe at the moment, the frame has QGVA resolution, is SD-, SDHC- and MMC-compatible, can hold up to 45 pictures, and costs US$76. Like I said, cute. [CNET Asia]

Digital Picture Frames Meet Pet Urns

Posted by Jason Chen at 5:00 AM on May 20, 2008

Digital Picture frames have been gaining in popularity lately, marrying convenience of having multiple pictures in one frame with the inconvenience of teaching old people how to use them. What's even better about this version is that it's for your pets. Your dead pets.

Kodak Photo Frames Come Pre-Loaded With Pics (Yours, Dummy)

Posted by Wilson Rothman at 12:40 AM on May 14, 2008

While we recognise that digital photo frames are at the least tech's spammiest product, and at the most a sure sign of the Apocalypse, Kodak has come up with a very good idea for its frames: 100 pre-loaded photos. And not just generic mountainscapes and shots of strangers posing on beaches, either. When you order your frame, you select 100 uploaded pics from your account in the Kodak Gallery, and they are saved to an SD card that ships with the frame. This has one very obvious implication: Giving a frame as a gift is no longer like assigning homework. Besides, 100 pics should take care of Grandma for at least 3-5 weeks. I have to hand it to Kodak for this one—it's not a bad idea at all. [Kodak]

USB Photo Frame Speakers Are Classier Than The Original

Posted by Jason Chen at 8:30 AM on April 23, 2008

We've seen photo frame speakers before, but this Brookstone version looks much, much classier. Gone is the birch-coloured 1970s-style wood, and in is a dark, black finish. The principal is the same: two photo frames that hold a 6" x 4" photo each, that also plug into your computer's USB port and act like speakers. Audiophiles won't enjoy the sound quality at all, but it's a neat integration of two things that are already on your desk. [Brookstone via Everything USB]

Picture Frame Shows Which of Your IM and Skype Friends Are Online

Posted by Jason Chen at 7:00 AM on April 9, 2008

We absolutely love it when cyberspace and meatspace intersect, which is why we're enthused over this Online Notification Picture Frame. It's a DIY project that connects via some interface (the guy doesn't say) to a computer, which feeds online status information back to the display. If a person's online, the LED next to his photo lights up. We'd prefer it if this were a more digital solution like an actual photo frame that dynamically displayed the pictures of people who were online, but this is a good start.
