Dell Axim X50v, Now with WM6 (Unofficially)

While Dell is not officially supporting their Windows Mobile 6 on their Axim X50 and X51 models, those who own the VGA versions might be interested in a new port created by a philanthropist programmer. Maybe the mod scene is the only place various smartphone users will find their WM6 fix, because it sure seems like there are a lot of dragging feet when it comes to mobile OS upgrades. We know it’s just software, big corporations. And we know that in many cases we don’t need new phones to run it. [XDAdevs via downloadsquad]

Zacod’s “3-axis” Touchpad Concept Should Stay A Concept

Zacod’s new concept touchpad is sporting its unique “3-axis” design, which originally debuted on cell phones and turned QWERTY keys into three-way joystick rockers. The PDA version has been adjusted to the stylus typing method; selecting a letter brings up a circular wheel of other possible letters and you drag/drop them into place.

LevelStar’s Icon Mobile Manager is a Screenless PDA

The Icon Mobile Manager by Levelstar is designed with a different clientele in mind: the visually impaired. Instead of a screen, the Icon features audio menus to help the user navigate, and acts as a hub for daily technology-related activities. This thing is just a great idea, designed specifically to give functionality to a user base that hasn’t enjoyed a PDA this full-featured. Despite being a niche product, the Icon Mobile Manager doesn’t skimp on power.

Dell Getting Into Smartphone Business

Remember when Dell dropped the Axim PDA and the world yawned like a slutty hippopotamus? Well, it looks like it was because even Dell knew that PDAs were out and smartphones (PDAs with calling capabilities) are in. They've contracted Quanta Computer—which incidentally supplies Dell's laptops as well—to build them a smartphone for launch in Q4 2007.

There aren't many details to be found, but "sources" claim that it's codenamed "Fly" and will have Windows Mobile 6, HSDPA, and possibly a QWERTY. Since we're loath to use a smartphone that doesn't have a keyboard, we hope that last part's true.

In a market dominated by HTC, we'll just have to see what Dell needs to do to bring something new to the table. – Jason Chen

PDA with Detachable Cellphone Gets Patent 15 Years Too Late

So apparently a patent has just been filed for a PDA with a detachable cellphone. It works like this: The phone sits in a recess behind the PDA. When they’re docked, you can transfer contacts from one to the other. When detached, the mobile works like a standard cellie, relying on its own battery.

An idea like this would have been cool maybe 15 years ago (before smartphones came into the picture). Today, I can only see it being (slightly) useful if it’s a slim camera attached to a smartphone, so that taking pictures won’t suck up my phone’s battery life. –Louis Ramirez
