The plasticky firearms feature a laser sight but it doesn’t seem much help, since those demonstrating the “color ball launchers” can’t quite hit their slow-moving example targets. I mean, we’ve got non-lethal weapons in the States too, like beanbag launchers, rubber bullets and pellets, but they’re called “non-lethal” because they’ll only barely not kill you. These paintball guns would probably be approved by our FCC for use by children under the age of twelve. So you’re welcome, criminals of Japan. Just wear an old shirt when you commit crimes and you’ll have nothing to worry about. [Japan Probe]

Instead of fancy tracks and miniaturised sensors, these ROMPs seem more like sophisticated all-terrain RC cars rigged with consumer cameras. Until you meet the older brother, of course, the weaponised WROMP with its big gun on top. In the words of its creator, Chris Rogers:

[The WROMP] is a weaponised version of the Remotely Operated Mobile Platform. The operator can “drive” the vehicle and fire the weapon although it is out of visual range. WROMP can also be used for reconnaissance and bomb investigation and remote detonation

As you can see, the weapon in this case is just a paintball machine gun. Enough for me, although Chris says the platform has been designed for any use, “including remote surveillance, security patrolling and bomb investigation.” The system uses an audio/video system linked to an VR headset for control, aiming, and firing.
The non-lethal weapon is meant for crowd control and getting people down without killing them. That’s all well and good, but with the bismuth inside designed to fragment on impact, I’m wondering just how non-lethal these things actually are. While they might not kill you outright if they hit you (unless you take it in the eye or something), you’re going to be in a serious world of hurt.

I mean, technically a baseball bat could be considered a non-lethal weapon, but I don’t know if it makes it laudably humane. [Danger Room]

Thankfully, the police understood there was no real danger in this vehicle, unless you consider plastering someone in red paint an act of war.

Complete with tank treads and 3-cylinder diesel engine, this is a paintball version of the Panzerkampfwagen VI—which is the actual technical denomination, it was nicknamed Tiger by Ferdinand Porsche, who competed for the Nazi government contract before doing cars for James Dean. This Tiger has a scuba-tank-powered cannon instead of terrifying 8.8 cm KwK 36 L/56 cannon that could take out Shermans and Churchills IVs from up to a mile away (1,600 metres.)

The armour in this half-sized version, however, it much lighter than the original model, which was able to withstand a direct impact of the 76.2 mm gun of the mighty Soviet T-34 tank. The mini-Tiger would probably not be able to stand the impact of a beer can. Still, we would love to give it a spin. This paintball robot “Gepetto” gets rid of such guilt. And, as you’ll see this video, it’s a lot funnier when a robot turns on its master to cause moderate levels of pain rather than death. Hit the video at 1:15 to watch a grown man curl up like a sissy as his children laugh in the background.

Then, to watch the same robot trained for Wiimote control, hit the jump.

It’s a technical piece, but you can skip to 4:20 for the demonstration. You’ll notice that the “fully trained” Gepetto is still only responding with about 20% accuracy…so it looks like a dream of Wiimote steering with precision aim is just a dream.

All in all, it’s a neat ongoing robot project. Hit the link for a full list of technical details and updates.

If you are ready to reenact Rommel’s campaign in North Africa, vandalize any wall in sight or look like Atom Ant, here’s the Paintball Panzer. At 3.4 x 4 x 6-foot it’s not comparable with the 17-tonne FV432 paintball tank after the jump, but I would love to have this mini-me version anyway. Compare specs and prices after the jump. Spoiler: Rommel gets killed and VanGogh cuts his ear.

Here are the Paintball Panzer specs:

• Glass reinforced plastic (GRP) chassis.
• An engine firewall.
• A fully integrated, ready-to-fire paintballing gun.
• A rollover bar.
• A roll cage.
• Choose from six colours for your mean machine.
• Can be driven on UK roads further to meeting DVLA regulations.
• Suitable for ages 15 years+.
• Size: 106 x 122 x 183cm.

On the other side, here’s that paintball FV432 in action: a 17-tonne armoured personnel carrier powered with a 800hp Rolls-Royce engine. These armoured vehicles have a rotating turret and a custom 40mm cannon that fires paint ammunition at a whooping 300 feet per second, which is actually lethal for humans but obviously not other tanks.

For just $150, you could play with six of these for two hours (trip to the UK not included.) On the other side, the Paintball Panzer has a $14,400 price tag. It will be yours for life, but 1) if you live in the UK, a Paintball Panzer will get you 192 hours of tank warfare with the real thing; and 2) if you live anywhere else, the same price will get you a few trips full of hardcore paintball action. Without a doubt, I would get the FV432 any day. Your pick, in the comments.
