It’d be easy to think that Telstra’s the only 4G game in town, because for now, it sort of is. Optus has run some trials in 700Mhz LTE, purchased Vividwireless and did promise that it would have a 4G network up and running around Newcastle in April 2012 while everyone got confused about what 4G actually is. Hang on. It is April 2012. What gives?
4G is one of the key technology movers this year — whether it’s the ACCC going after Apple over the “4G” iPad, Telstra launching a bevy of 4G devices ahead of Optus’ any-day-now 4G launch — or the whole contentious issue of what should be regarded as “4G” anyway. But how important is 4G when it comes to gadget buying?
One of the more annoying features of Optus’ prepaid offering for mobile broadband is that it counts data in 10MB chunks, which means your usage can ratchet up fairly speedily. That will change from late April, with Optus switching to a slightly more reasonable per MB charging model.
When Virgin Mobile announced it’d be selling the One X, I pretty much picked that it’d also end up at Optus as well. Optus has just confirmed this, as well as announcing its pricing plans.
Optus has concluded a trial of 700MHz 4G services in Bendigo, claiming speeds of up to 70Mbps and transmission distances of 13 kilometres. That’s good news in the long term, particularly for rural areas, but it won’t make any difference right now.
HTC’s One handsets are lining up to be interesting creatures, but the exact details of which carrier would snag which handset hasn’t been clear. The One X has emerged at an unlikely first port of call; it’ll be a Virgin Mobile handset.
1800MHz? 2100MHz? 700MHz? What frequencies are Australian 4G networks on right now, and what does the future hold? Here’s what you need to know.
Telstra’s confirmed it’ll have the new iPad on March the 16th, and its competitors seem likely to announce the same thing this afternoon. Updated: Optus has just confirmed with me that they’ll be offering it as well.
How much of your personal data would you be willing to hand over to Optus in return for bargain offers? That’s the basis of a trial that Optus has been running since the start of the year.
