10:05AM Nick Broughall | It’s probably the beginning of the apocalypse or something, but Australia is actually starting to get things before the United States. Last week it was the iPhone 3G, and this week it’s the new Batman movie – The Dark Knight is in Australian Cinemas today, but not hitting the US until Friday. This almost makes up for Disney delaying Wall-E by 3 months in Australia. Almost.
In any case, because of the exciting Australian exclusive, Village Roadshow are cranking up the piracy paranoia prevention, and issuing staff at workers at cinemas nationwide with night-vision goggles, according to News.com.au. That’s right, the same guys that will be picking up your empty popcorn boxes will also be armed with state of the art military tech to stop you from recording a copy of the film for YouTube.
If you do decide to risk it and are caught, expect to be silently shot in the back of the head ejected from the cinema post haste.

EyeClops Night Vision Goggles, My Secret Manhunt Weapon
11:00PM Benny Goldman | The EyeClops Night Vision goggles let you see in total darkness using infrared lights, all while giving you that special Terminator look. Two attachments allow visibility 10 or 20 feet ahead—the 10-footers give off no light, the 20s show some small red dots. I tried them on in a pitch black room and saw every poster on the wall easily. They’re US$80, and they’ll be out sometime this fall. A giant game of Manhunt will follow shortly after. [EyeClops] More »

Now we’ve got a face-on of what it’s going to look like when you run a over paparazzi that looks eerily like Jason Chen (Benny’s the bowl-cut in the foreground). Nightvision For Any Car: FLIR PathfindIR
9:28AM Brian Lam | The Bottom line: Remember that urban tale of the drug running lambo doing 200mph runs using merely nightvision? FLIR, used to making commercial nightvision systems for law enforcement, marine, and airborne vehicle has trickled the tech into civilian hands. The PathfindIR is their first infrared nightvision adaptable for any car, although they’ll be demo’ing at CES in a BMW. The camera (below) gets mounted in a grill, and the AV output hooks into any LCD and even some dashboard nav systems. The video looks to be a relatively low res 320 x 240, with a wide 36º H x 27º V field of view. The best news: the IR system lets cars see 5x further than high beams. The catch: Staring at a LCD on your dash sound dangerous. Demo video after the jump. More »

Ushers Use Night-Vision Goggles To Bust Movie Pirates
12:30AM Seamus Byrne | Perhaps it’s because of the desire to keep flashlights out of the eyes of innocent moviegoers, perhaps it’s because of the Guillermo Del Toro-ian fear the look inspires, or perhaps it’s because they just like sweet gadgets, Malaysian ushers are beginning to use night-vision goggles to spot pirates. The goggles, a present from the Motion Picture Association of America, have already proved their usefulness in 17 cases in the past two months, a time when studios were releasing Spider Man 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean: When Will This Series End?. Another ploy by the MPAA was to import a pair of DVD-sniffing dogs. Responsible for turning up more than half a million bootleg movies, the dogs are now rumored to have a price on their heads, courtesy of said Malaysian pirates. According to blueprints from the Acme Company, the MPAA will next attempt to mount a large red rocket and light its fuse while aiming it at the place where the Malaysian movie pirates are eating strategically placed birdseed. – Wilson Rothman Malaysia cinemas use night goggles to nab pirates [Reuters] More »
