The Things Malcolm Ate
12:08PM Brian Lam | My perspective is that nature always beats technology. Waves eat ships, roaches beat Mortein and earthquakes topple buildings. Every day, this conflict plays itself out in front of my eyes as Malcolm the puppy gnaws on gadgets. More »

4:40AM Adam Frucci | Wildlife photographer Michael Nichols wanted to photograph a 90-metre tall redwood in a dense forest with no clear lines of sight. So he built a custom camera rig to take tons of close-ups to stitch together. More »

Gorgeous Magic Made Out Of Street Lights And Bugs
2:00AM Matt Buchanan | I mean, it looks like magic to me. But it’s really just a series of long exposures of bugs, flying under a street light. Which somehow makes it more incredible. [Vimeo via Nick Bilton]

Woodstation: A Wooden LED Weather Station
4:46PM Brian Lam | Neat. The LEDs sit below the surface of the wood, like our favourite wood alarm clock. Also, has a motion sensor which turns on the device when someone approaches. All house gadgets should have this feature. [Firebox via Engadget] More »

Obama Considers Zany Climate Engineering Gadgets to Fight ‘The Warming’
2:40PM Adrian Covert | Obama is apparently considering using a machine that would suck up smog and shoot it into the upper atmosphere—reflecting the sun’s rays—as a way to fight global warming. I’m not joking. More »

2:35AM Jack Loftus | First, the otters learned to use camcorders. Today, Cuban Tree Frogs are glowing like E.T. in the muggy swamplands of Southern Florida. And yes, this is a real, live froggy, not some lame USB dongle. More »

2:46PM Nick Broughall | It’s Friday. In Sydney it has been raining since the early hours of the morning. And on top of that, it’s a slow news day. So to keep you guys entertained, I thought I should share what can only be described as some of the most disgusting creatures in the world today, courtesy of Popular Science. Some of them are a bit “meh” (a weird looking mushroom?), but I challenge anyone to watch the Bot Fly video and not want to throw up. That is wrong on every level of the word.
Possibly NSFW, but only because it’s so disgusting you’ll be gagging and shouting “no!” at your computer screen. Hit the link for all 12.

Ecotones Adapts to Outside Sounds to Lull You to Sleep
5:45PM Gizmodo US Edition | Traditional sound machines tend to use white noise or repetitive nature sounds to compete with the cacophony of the outside, but that only works to a certain extent. Ecotones, by Silicon Valley start up ASTI, is hoping to one-up them by actually being able to adapt to the user’s environment. You can choose from 12 different SoundStories–including settings, I bet, like ocean or rainforest–that play at 18-bit quality, better than standard CDs. Audio backgrounds react to cues in the listening space and combine them with hundreds of “natural” sounds to make a soundscape that’s supposedly a lot more relaxing. It’s available through Hammacher Schlemmer for $US299. Wow, anything for a good night’s rest, I guess? [Hammacher] More »
