Almost a year ago, Google held a press conference to announce Google Wallet, an ambitious, multi-faceted plan for a cash-free future in which mobile phones would replace hard currency.
Vendors, rejoice! That extra $US0.15 fee Square tacks on to every transaction is going away. While you’ll still owe the mobile payment company 2.5 per cent of the transaction, getting rid of the fixed cost is a nice little perk for retailers, who I’m sure will pass the savings onto you. After delays affected the shipment of their payment-processing dongles, Square is almost ready to press “go” on mobile payments, with the Wall Street Journal reporting that it’ll be open to the elbowing public later this winter. Apparently, their Chinese factory is able to produce 10,000 dongles each day – which is a lot of mobile payments. [WSJ]
