Faster syncing with Mac and PC. Changes you make to contacts and calendars on your Mac (Address Book and iCal) or PC (Microsoft Outlook) are now automatically pushed up to the cloud every time you make an update. Likewise, changes you make on me.com, iPhone, or iPod touch are automatically pushed to your Mac or PC. As a result, your contacts and calendars update faster across all your devices. To take advantage of faster syncing, be sure you’re running Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.6 (Mac) or MobileMe Control Panel 1.3 (Windows).

After a lousy launch in 2008, Apple decided to avoid associating the word “push” with Mobile Me until they could get synchronisation between computers and mobile devices (iPhones, iPod touch) down to acceptable times. Looks like it’s close enough now to bring the term back.

Another new feature, iDisk file sharing, has been around since the 13th. Improved iPhone notification and syncing and better web app performance round out the improvements.

Dear MobileMe member:

Over the past few months, we have been working hard to make MobileMe the best service it can be. Here is a summary of the improvements and performance enhancements that have recently been completed.
Easy file sharing. iDisk now makes it even easier to share files that are too big to email. Simply select a file in the iDisk web app and click the Share File button to generate an email with a download link. You can also optionally add password protection and set an expiration date for the link. For more details, view this tutorial.

Improved notifications and sync on iPhone. Reliability of new email notifications and syncing of contacts and calendar with MobileMe have both been improved. To get the best MobileMe experience on your iPhone or iPod touch, you should be running iPhone Software 2.2 or later.

Better web app performance. We have also improved the overall performance of the web apps at me.com including faster start time in Calendar and searching in Contacts. For more details, see this support article.
Remember, to take advantage of these improvements, your computers and devices must be running the latest software versions indicated above.

The chaps at Valleywag have worked it out, and it’s a classic. The guy now in charge of MobileMe, and all of Apple’s online services—Eddy Cue—was actually originally in charge of the iTunes Store: the place where service outages really messed up the iPhone 3G’s launch. Remember the iPocalypse? Hmmm. That now makes us wonder what happened to Cue’s former boss Sina Tamaddon (on the right in the pic) and Rob Schoeben, who was in charge of MobileMe’s launch. Did they too get punishment promotions? [Valleywag]

Ars has decided to the release the full email Steve Jobs sent to Apple employees declaring that “MobileMe was simply not up to Apple’s standards.” There’s actually not much you haven’t already read, other than the additional admonishment that it “was not our finest hour.” Granted, that probably means at least 20 more people were flayed than we originally believed. Here’s the whole thing:

Team,

The launch of MobileMe was not our finest hour. There are several things we could have done better:

- MobileMe was simply not up to Apple’s standards – it clearly needed more time and testing.

- Rather than launch MobileMe as a monolithic service, we could have launched over-the-air syncing with iPhone to begin with, followed by the web applications one by one – Mail first, followed 30 days later (if things went well with Mail) by Calendar, then 30 days later by Contacts.

- It was a mistake to launch MobileMe at the same time as iPhone 3G, iPhone 2.0 software and the App Store. We all had more than enough to do, and MobileMe could have been delayed without consequence.

We are taking many steps to learn from this experience so that we can grow MobileMe into a service that our customers will love. One step that I can share with you today is that the MobileMe team will now report to Eddy Cue, who will lead all of our internet services – iTunes, the App Store and, starting today, MobileMe. Eddy’s new title will be Vice President, Internet Services and he will now report directly to me.

The MobileMe launch clearly demonstrates that we have more to learn about Internet services. And learn we will. The vision of MobileMe is both exciting and ambitious, and we will press on to make it a service we are all proud of by the end of this year.

Steve

We all know that Apple’s MobileMe had a difficult birth: but it’s quite another thing to be able to read the criticisms of the service from his Steveness himself. And over at Ars Technica they’ve got hold of an internal Apple email that Steve Jobs sent out to Apple employees detailing his displeasure that MobileMe was “not up to Apple’s Standards.” It needed both more time in testing, and a piece-by-piece launch, rather than attempting to launch it as a “monolithic service,” he thinks.

Perhaps most interesting of all is the fact that Steve thinks “it was a mistake to launch MobileMe at the same time as iPhone 3G, iPhone 2.0 software and the App Store,” which is an admission that perhaps Apple had bitten off more than they could chew. “We all had more than enough to do, and MobileMe could have been delayed without consequence.” That’s pretty evident, and clearly something that Apple needs to keep an eye on in the future.

History looks much clearer with the benefit of hindsight, but it also looks like Steve has acted to protect future MobileMe development with a restructuring of the team. The team now reports to a chap called Eddy Cue (his name has appeared connected to iTunes in the past) who in turn will report directly to Steve. In fact, Eddy is now in charge of all web-related services, including iTunes and the App Store. That sounds eminently sensible, but leaves us wondering what the structure was like before? And what happened to the exec formerly in charge of MobileMe— did they get the chop?

Steve closes by being frank about the lack-lustre start to MobileMe’s life: “The MobileMe launch clearly demonstrates that we have more to learn about Internet services.” But clearly he intends Apple to learn from its mistakes and not trip up in the same way again: “And learn we will.” [Ars Technica]

With those issues behind them Apple has resolved to switch gears and focus on improving other areas of the service. Appleinsider forum members are still reporting problems though, so this resolution may still be a little premature.

Mossberg has rolled out an in-depth review of MobileMe backed by a week of testing in today’s WSJ, and if you’ve been following our coverage it won’t come as too big of a surprise that he’s not a fan. But his problems with the service go well beyond the launch hiccups you’ve read about. So what’s got Mossberg so riled up that he’s thrown down his big badhammer on MobileMe?

His review is behind WSJ’s curtain, so to summarise:

His major gripe with MobileMe is that unlike most Apple products he’s reviewed, it doesn’t “just work.” He cites changes made on computers taking “15 minutes, at best” to sync out to the web interface and iPhones, which is a big no-no for a service touting instant syncing across all of your devices. Other results from his test are equally disappointing:

Web interface sluggish, and needs to be hard-refreshed to get changes to show up.

Web-based storage is full of bugs when trying to connect with Windows machines

Tons of incompatibilities bringing Mac contact groups and calendars into Outlook–things showing up as separate address books and calendars rather than groups or merging into the main calendar.

Synched contacts loading slowly on iPhone, occasionally loading with no phone numbers and dropping custom ringtones (to play the Rocky theme when Pogue calls?)

In short, MobileMe is still full of substantial bugs and isn’t close to being ready for prime time, if you haven’t been able to tell already. Coming from Mossberg, though, means Apple needs to get serious about fixing this thing. So if you’re on the fence of whether to drop the US$100 on a subscription, it’s probably a good idea to wait a bit.

Here’s the report straight from Walt’s iSight.

Apple’s MobileMe service hit so many snags during its launch period that Apple have just issued an email apology to members. Saying “The transition from .Mac to MobileMe was a lot rockier than we had hoped,” Apple’s apologising with a 30-day membership extension for free to anyone who was a .Mac member with an active account as of July 9, 2008 and new MobileMe members who created accounts on or before July 15, 7:00 PM PDT. Details can be found on the Apple support page here. The email also apologises for the controversy over the speediness of “push” services, and says that Apple’s not using the term until it really is “near-instant on PCs and Macs, too.”

We have recently completed the transition from .Mac to MobileMe. Unfortunately, it was a lot rockier than we had hoped.

Although core services such as Mail, iDisk, Sync, Back to My Mac, and Gallery went relatively smoothly, the new MobileMe web applications had lots of problems initially. Fortunately we have worked through those problems and the web apps are now up and running.

Another snag we have run into is our use of the word “push” in describing everything under the MobileMe umbrella. While all email, contact or calendar changes on the iPhone and the web apps are immediately synced to and from the MobileMe “cloud,” changes made on a PC or Mac take up to 15 minutes to sync with the cloud and your other devices. So even though things are indeed instantly pushed to and from your iPhone and the web apps today, we are going to stop using the word “push” until it is near-instant on PCs and Macs, too.

We want to apologise to our loyal customers and express our appreciation for their patience by giving all current subscribers an automatic 30-day extension to their MobileMe subscription free of charge. Your extension will be reflected in your account settings within the next few weeks.
We hope you enjoy your new suite of web applications at me.com, in addition to keeping your iPhone and iPod touch wirelessly in sync with these new web applications and your Mac or PC.

Thank you,
The MobileMe Team
