VLC Media Player Now Available For iPhone and iPod Touch

Posted by Sean Fallon at 3:50 AM on June 5, 2008

Thanks to Zottd, iPhone users can now port the popular VLC media player to their iPhone or iPod touch, making it possible to drag, drop and play MPEG/MPG, AVI and MP3 media formats. He is also in the process of researching playback for VCD, DivX, WMA, and WMV, and he notes that FLAC and OGG are coming soon. The project is currently in beta, but a public release is on its way. Naturally, you will need a jailbroken phone to take part in this awesomeness. [zottd via Macrumors]

GameStop Squashes Its Bad Zune Habit

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 2:00 AM on May 26, 2008

It was always strange seeing a video game retailer peddling MP3 players, but nevertheless GameStop has ceased selling Microsoft Zune portable media players. The breakup puts a small speedbump in Microsoft's path to wrest marketshare away from Apple's iPod line, and could slow the progress Zune made against Creative earlier this month. While the initial reaction might be doom-and-gloom for the Zune, the level-headed amongst us will remember that GameStop sells video games, not music players, and big box chains like Target, Best Buy and Wal-Mart will continue to stock it. GameStop said it will continue to sell Zunes until stock is dry, so if you're looking for a deal you might want to stop by your local store. [The Street via Kotaku]

Rumour: Microsoft And Sanity To Finally Launch Their Online Music Store

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 11:09 AM on May 2, 2008

When Microsoft launched Vista in January last year, one of the most "exciting" aspects was the collaboration between Microsoft and Sanity to provide an online music service that would be integrated into Windows Media Player. It would offer both pay-per-track downloads, plus an all-you-can-eat subscription buffet that allowed you to transfer unlimted tracks to a WMA DRM-compatible MP3 player.

It never happened.

Until now. Apparently. Smarthouse is reporting  that the service is currently being tested in Melbourne, and is set to go live between the end of May or early June.

LG T80 PMP Packs in Touchscreen, DVB for Europeans

Posted by Haroon Malik at 11:00 PM on April 13, 2008

LG has just revealed the T80 PMP, which has the makings of a promising media player, at least for the Europeans. The T80 boasts a 3-inch, 260k colour (420 x 240) touchscreen, supports MPEG, MP3, WMA, OGG, WAV, ASF, JPEG, TXT files, has an FM tuner, integrated microphone and a DVB-T receiver, which blows for anyone outside of Europe. The T80 will endure 5.5hours of video playback or 3 hours of TV viewing on a single charge, comes with a paltry 4GB disk space and assaults your wallet at €299 ($506). If you're hot for the player, consider getting your import on. [Generationmp3 via PMP Today]

Nokia took the shroud off its WiMAX-capable N810 Tablet today, which promises 4g mobile broadband speeds for the handheld internet tablet. The updated N810 will use Sprint's Xohm service, and adds a new mobile dimension to the device, which was previously Wi-Fi only.

Linksys Media Center Extender DMA2200 Reviewed

Australian Post Posted by Nathan Taylor at 12:18 PM on March 14, 2008

Linksys DMA2200.jpgI'm a huge fan of home media servers, but the enduring problem with them is that the available network media streaming appliances have, by and large, sucked. The Xbox 360 recently received a firmware update that improved its capabilities, but a hacked Xbox running Xbox Media Center (XBMC) is still probably the best product available for the job.

CNET, however, has recently published a review of the Linksys DMA2200 that might have me changing my mind on that. It supports all the codecs that people are actually interested in using (Divx, Xvid, Windows Media, H.264 and MPEG1, 2 and 4), which is not something that can be said of, say, the Apple TV. It can stream and control live TV from a PC, effectively turning your PC into a remote PVR. It also supports 802.11n networking, which is enough to do HD over wireless.

Anyway, if you're interested in knowing more, just follow the link. [CNET]

Motorola Updates Its Mobile TV With Navigator

Posted by Addy Dugdale at 7:43 PM on February 19, 2008

Motorola's DH01 mobile TV, above, seen at CES last month, has been updated already. The beleaguered electronics company added a GPS navigation system to the DVR (and an "n" to the model number) and took its DH01n to Barcelona's MWC to show off. It still uses DVB-H format, though, which ain't exactly popular over here. [Motorola]

Tactile MP3 Player Begs to Be Touched

Posted by Sean Fallon at 9:45 AM on January 29, 2008

tactile_player.jpgOne look at this "Tactile MP3" player concept may have you thinking that it is a device for the blind. While, the control buttons do resemble Braille, this MP3 player is really for anyone that enjoys running their fingers across small raised bumps (and who doesn't love that!). It also has a clean design and a small form factor that is somewhat appealing. I can definitely see this type of approach being incorporated into real world products somewhere down the line. Olive Media Adds Some Spice to the OPUS Nº5 Digital Music Player

Posted by Jennifer Hooker at 3:20 AM on December 6, 2007

olive_rashid_1.jpgOlive Media teamed up with designer Karim Rashid (the guy with the glasses who's in those Dirt Devil commercials) to release a series of OPUS Nº5 music players with four different psychedelic graphic designs. According to Rashid, the inspiration for his designs came from music itself (we're guessing music from the '70s), "Omni-directional like sound, the patterns emphasise the 'voluminous' beats that radiate from music." The specs on the Karim Rashid flavors of the OPUS Nº5 remain the same, and include up to a 750GB hard drive, a CD player/burner and audio streaming capabilities. If you want the digital audio player in your living room so you can get down tonight, be prepared to hand over $3450. [Olive Media]
