iOS Magsafe Connector Patent Is A Great Idea

Flag
9:15AM January 27, 2012 | Nick Broughall

The 30-pin dock connector used by all iOS devices is old and dated. Sure there’s a thriving ecosystem of peripherals out there that use the connection, but given the elegance of the devices, the dock feels clunky. But that could all change soon, with Apple applying for a patent that would bring it Magsafe connector technology to its iOS devices. More »

Did Apple Just Win A MagSafe Patent Application For iOS Devices — Or Something Else?

7:20PM August 18, 2011 | Kat Hannaford

Over a year ago Apple filed a patent application for adding a MagSafe-like connector to iOS devices. Unfortunately, their newly granted patent may sound like MagSafe’s coming to iPads and iPhones — but this isn’t it. More »

Why Rubber-Banding My Power Brick Is The Smartest Thing Ever

7:00AM January 22, 2011 | Joe Brown

There were 15 of us clustered around a not-large-enough table at CES, almost all plugged into identical power adapters. I put a rubber band around mine to keep from mixing it up with somebody else’s. Turns out, I’m a genius. More »

Last Day To Buy HyperMac’s External MacBook Batteries (With Cords)

9:30PM November 1, 2010 | Kat Hannaford

At midnight tonight, HyperMac will shutter shop and re-open as HyperJuice “in the coming weeks”. This is, of course, due to Apple getting all legal on their use of patent-defying MagSafe connectors, but HyperMac is hopeful something can be arranged. More »

HyperMac Pulling Plug On MacBook Charging Cables

11:45PM October 18, 2010 | Brian Barrett

This is why we can’t have nice (allegedly patent-infringing) things! After drawing legal heat from Apple for its MagSafe connectors, HyperMac has announced that they’ll stop selling their MacBook charging cables and car chargers on November 2. But there’s hope! More »

Apple’s MagSafe Connectors Could Be Used On iPads, iPhones

2:22AM October 9, 2010 | Kat Hannaford

Before worrying about your iPod dock’s future (and the whole of China’s accessory ecosystem being thrown into disarray), listen up: I don’t think we need to worry about the iPad and iPhone eschewing the humble 30-pin connector. More »

11:35PM September 11, 2009 | Joanna Stern

Apple MagSafe Replacements Are Now Free

9:40AM August 20, 2008 | Mark Wilson

In our anecdotal experience, Apple has been pretty good about replacing clearly faulty MagSafe power adapters—the ones that split or fray from faulty manufacture. But now they are making their replacement policy official and offering free MagSafe replacements for the MacBook (13-inch Late 2006), MacBook (13-inch), MacBook Pro (15-inch Glossy), MacBook Pro (17-inch). (We read that as all models that use the MagSafe power adapter). Bring in your bad MagSafes to any Apple retailer and they’ll take care of you. [Apple via Cult of Mac]

MagStay Is For People Who Use Macs But Hate Steve Jobs

2:15AM March 7, 2008 | Wilson Rothman

You’re forced to use a Mac for assorted reasons (boss made you; school requires it; reliability in general) but you don’t like it. The best way to stick it to the Jobsman is to buy a US$12 MagStay. This little plastic thingamajig locks into the USB port next to the MagSafe magnetic breakaway power adapter, holding it in place come hell or high water. This will show your blatant defiance of Apple design, and your disdain for a particular convenience and laptop-safety factor that PC laptops still don’t have. You will have to surrender one of your two USB ports, but hey, what’s rebellion without a little bloodletting? [Product Page via Gadget Lab]
