Leaked Apple Patent Filing is Full of New Multitouch Tech For a Mac Tablet

Posted by John Mahoney at 1:58 AM on August 29, 2008

Appleinsider has gotten their hands on a large patent filing from Apple that we haven't seen before, and it's loaded with plans for how a multitouch interface would work on a tablet Mac running full-blown OS X. It covers how small interface buttons will be handled, iPhone-like scrolling through lists, details on a full multi-touch keyboard, and a nifty pop-up scroll wheel. And on top of all that, it seems like it'll even work if you have freaky alien fingers! Let's take a closer look.

Open Tech Mac Clone Company Wants To Sell Itself For US$50,000

Posted by Jason Chen at 4:00 AM on August 26, 2008

It's only been three weeks since the Mac "clone" company Open Tech made its debut, but it's already putting itself up for sale for US$50,000. In an email on July 20, their Vice President Elijah Samaroo said that they were going to "beat Psystar and not make the mistake they did." By this we took it to mean not distribute a hacked copy of Leopard, which is already available on the internet and is what people have been installing OS X on non-Apple machines for quite a while. That's not what they were doing, unfortunately.

Mac minis Turned Into Other Fetish Boxes People Drool Over

Posted by Matt Buchanan at 10:30 AM on August 23, 2008

Apple might neglect the Mac mini more than apparently hipsters do showers in mid-August, but some people love it enough to lavish it with the attention no one else does. Hideo Takano is one of those people, transforming the little fetish block into other boxes people obsess over: an over-sized Lego block for Apple-loving manboys to dream of building a Mac minizord, and a cute little gas can for pyromaniacs. Or simply other Macs--like a Quadra or a Mac Pro. We really love the bright red gas can:

Psystar 'Definitely Still Shipping' Mac Clones

Posted by Sean Fallon at 4:49 AM on August 15, 2008

Psystar simply doesn't know when to quit. Despite being in the midst of a lawsuit with Apple, they continue to push their luck. Not only are they offering free Leopard restore disks to their customers, Psystar has also confirmed that the Mac clones are "definitely still shipping." They had better hope that their fancy Palo Alto-based Carr & Ferrell lawyers can back up all of this machismo. [InformationWeek]

Australian Mac Sales Closing In On Toshiba And Lenovo

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 3:17 PM on August 12, 2008

According to a report on ZDNet today, analysts from both Gartner and IDC are claiming that Apple's Australian market share is growing at a rate that far outstrips the competition. And this is despite the fact that Macs cost twice as much as PCs...

Gartner analysts apparently reckon that the house that Jobs built is recording 52% year on year growth, and in the second quarter of 2008 captured 5.3% of the market (compared to 3.8% for the previous year.

But what's even more interesting is that Analyst group IDC claim that Apple are fast approaching Toshiba and Lenovo, who each claim about 8% market share (although they claim Apple has 6.2% market from Q1 2008).

HP are still the country's biggest computer maker, with Dell and Acer behind them.

Although nobody outside of Apple probably has any way of knowing, but I wonder just how much of an effect the Sydney Apple Store has had on Mac sales?

Apple Earnings: Record Quarter, Steve Promises 'Wonderful New Products' This Year

Posted by Matt Buchanan at 7:46 AM on July 22, 2008

Last quarter was the best June quarter in Apple's history in both earnings and profits, but the real news is that Steve actually promised new products later this year: "We set a new record for Mac sales, we think we have a real winner with our new iPhone 3G, and we're busy finishing several more wonderful new products to launch in the coming months." Apple never comments on future products in any way, shape or form. Ever ever. Whether he's alleviating investor worries or just feeling especially open, it's a rare, if not totally unheard of Apple move. Check out how much money Apple's bean counters are dealing with and speculate what new toys are on the way below.

Psystar HQ Up for Sale, Buy It Now for US$4.6 Million

Posted by Matt Buchanan at 5:20 AM on July 20, 2008

Not looking so good on the Psystar front. Following Apple's inevitable lawsuit and demand that every Mac clone be recalled, apparently their HQ is on the market and "priced for quick sale" by owners Constructora Canahuati. "Find new headquarters" is a hell of an addition to an already busy to-do list. [Yahoo!, Thanks Sean!]

Apple Now #3 U.S. Computer Maker, Behind Only Dell and HP

Posted by Matt Buchanan at 12:40 AM on July 18, 2008

Last Friday might've been the most important day of the year for Apple, but today's looking pretty shiny too: Gartner estimates that sales of 1.4 million Macs last quarter effectively make it the number three computer maker in the US, trailing only Dell and HP, thanks to a swoopy 38 percent growth in Mac sales.

Meta: Artist Uses Old Macs as Canvases for Mac Fanboy Paintings

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 9:40 AM on July 9, 2008

Instead of turning it into a jukebox, a jack-o-lantern, or worse, a web server hosting your text-only fan site, why not ship that old Mac of yours out to Melbourne, Australia where painter and street artist Satta van Daal will slap on some fanboy-approved Apple imagery as part of his iPaint myMac series. I'm actually a little surprised it's taken this long for me to see a Mac with Jobs and Woz's bearded mugs on it. Maybe I just wasn't looking hard enough. [Satta Van Daal via Team Teabag]
