When Life Gives You Lemons, Make A Nicely Designed Digital Clock

12:10AM John Mahoney | You probably remember the ol’ lemon/copper battery via electrolysis experiment from when Mr. Wizard blew your mind with it in 1958. But this “Citrus Clock” by French design troupe Anna Gram updates the concept with a touch of Ikea sensibilities, to the point where we might be cool with this sitting on the kitchen counter (quick access for lemon tea). But the UV bug light we’d have to install next to it to catch the fruit flies might cancel out the sleekness. [Anna Gram via Design Boom] More »

When Life Throws You Lemons, Make Lemon Lights

2:45AM Mark Wilson | We’ve all seen wires coming out of potatoes to power lightbulbs, but the design has always been a crude science experiment, not something with the polish of a real product. This Lemon Light is just an artist’s work, but it’s a brilliant design all the same. Simply cut off one end of the lemon and replace it with this lemon-shaped bulb. The result is a light that mimics nature while it glows only dimly, reminding us of the value of energy…and making us really want to buy one of these neat Lemon Lights. [Yurisuzuki via MAKE] More »
