Socialcam For iPhone And Android

11:00AM March 8, 2011 | Kyle VanHemert

We’ve got the mobile photo sharing thing down. Whether you’re broadcasting them over Twitter, sharing them on Instagram, or just SMSing your shots to your friends, it seems like everyone’s pretty comfortable with sharing their smartphone photos. Not necessarily the case with video! Do I send a crummy compressed copy via SMS? Or take the time to upload to YouTube? I never really know, so I usually don’t bother. Socialcam, a new app from the video streaming gurus at JustinTV, is hoping to bring simple video sharing to the mainstream. More »

19-Year-Old Commits Suicide Live on Justin.tv While Commenters Egg Him On

1:00AM November 22, 2008 | Adam Frucci

Here’s a story nobody likes to see. 19-year-old Abraham K. Biggs overdosed on pills on a live webcam stream before hundreds of people on Wednesday night, all while commenters on Justin.tv and bodybuilding.com encouraged him, apparently thinking it was some kind of joke. He lay passed out on his webcam for hours until he appeared to stop breathing, at which point the people watching realised it was no joke.

New iMac Impressions and Facts (Live from Giz HQ)

6:48AM August 9, 2007 | Brian Lam

You’ve seen our hardware gallery and know all about the New iMac’s specs. I guess it’s time to take an extended look at it, and I might as well turn on the Justin.tv lifecam. I also just got back from Cupertino where I learned some details which I’ll write about in this post, in a bit. I might try to answer some of the questions you guys have about the new hardware and iLife, too. Updates to come. More »

Bobby.TV versus Justin.TV, as UK Police Get Helmet Cams

6:30AM July 13, 2007 | Seamus Byrne

Following successful trials, British policemen are to be issued with head cameras while they are on the beat. The £3 million ($6.1 million) scheme, which led to an increase in the number of convictions of offenders when it was tried out in the south-western town of Plymouth, is to be rolled out throughout the country.

Three hundred police officers were given access to 50 cameras and body-worn video equipment, which they could strap on during day or night patrols. The visual evidence of crimes meant that it was well-nigh impossible for the perpetrators to get away with it, as was frequently the case. There was less paperwork for the police, less time spent in court, earlier guilty pleas and an increase in convictions. More »

Justin.tv visits iPhone Campout: San Francisco

2:45PM June 29, 2007 | Seamus Byrne

So the Giz Justin.tv channel has been a little wonky in the early stages of our campout coverage, but Justin of Justin.tv has come by to outfit us with a new camera to combat the less-than-stellar sound and check out the circus himself. Gizmodo is holding up strong here, except that these goddamn street drummers won’t stop (wait…they’re leaving!). But the night is young…and still warm. Stay tuned, Gizmodo faithful. More »

How Justin.TV’s Live Video System Was Born

10:26AM June 15, 2007 | Seamus Byrne

Like most great ideas, the concept behind Justin.tv is simple: a video stream, anytime, anywhere. But the hardware behind it all wasn’t so easy to make, so Justin called up a friend, Kyle Vogt, to hand-build version 1.0 from some off-the-shelf parts, a grip of EVDO cards and some “borrowed” equipment from MIT.
