And I absolutely love it when the answers are really weird, like with the strange jet truck mystery I posted about on Tuesday.

Like the ones in this page, it is a snowblower. Or better said, a snow melter. The ones above use Klimov VK-1 engines from Mig-15 planes. The one from Tuesday could have been the engine from a Mig-17. They also use these to melt ice on other planes engines—while waiting on the cold Russian airport runways—and train tracks, as you can see in the gallery (in that case, they used half the plane).

Crazy Ivans. You gotta love those guys. Except when they send their Akula-class nuclear subs to patrol around New York. Batman normally likes to stretch his legs and have trunkspace for a few accidental dead bodies. But he might pilot an ATV powered by a jet engine on a weekend at the links.

John Carnett modded brand new Polaris RZR 2-seater ATV with a grey market, 40-year-old turbine. The result is a 114db joystick-driven vehicle that spews out 1300°F exhaust to achieve around 100kph. And it sounds glorious.

Our only regret is that Carnett was too sane to take his jet ATV over any sweet jumps. Give him time, though. A guy who builds stuff like this has to be slipping a bit. [PopSci]

Well this is how you quit.

OK, the F-4 Ejection Seat will not actually eject you from the next corporate board meeting, but your boss doesn’t need to know that. Roll into the room on this baby—an authentic bucket seat from the Vietnam-era F4—and every order he barks will be undermined by a doubt that you could blow the hell out of there any time you please.

Add a helmet to the equation for extra style/authenticity.

While you can order the F-4 Ejection Seat right from the web, this piece of office furniture is technically considered art. But don’t consider it an expensive toy; consider it a worthwhile investment in your manager’s insanity. Now you can buy his biggest and baddest engine on eBay.

This twin engine produces 100lbs of thrust by burning a mix of gasoline and kerosene—no need for jet fuel. Consisting of two 23kg engines that can each reportedly thrust a bike forward at 120kph, nothing but trouble can await those who install this twice-as-powerful, 140 decibel engine that glows “red hot” while burning 1.5 gallons of fuel per mile.

Buy your pulsejet engine now on eBay for $US1200, or make a lowball offer and spend the rest on life insurance. You really can’t go wrong.
These are the first images of the stealthy Predator C Avenger in flight. With a 20 metre wingspan, the latest and deadliest Unmanned Aerial Vehicle yet can fly for 20 hours powered by its jet engine.

Made by General Atomics (Taking Over The World Really Soon Now™), the Avenger uses a Pratt & Whitney Canada PW545B powerplant capable of delivering 400 knots (740km/h) at 60,000 feet. This is the same turbofan engine on the Cessna Citation XLS business jet.

Unlike the Citation, however, this angel of destruction can load 3,000 pounds of weapons in its fully internal bay. The bay is internal to match the rest of its stealthy design which—like the F-22 Raptor or the F-35 Lightning II—has no sharp angle differences between surfaces to reduce its radar signature.

Also like the F-35, this perfect flying machine can also carry a foward-looking infrared sensors adapted from the the Joint Strike Fighter. The cost of the robotic fighter is probably between ten dollars and a zillion gazillion euros, but it will make trips to enemy bases to deliver bombs and missiles for free.
Stephen Trimble—master of all things flying—has found this video that apparently shows a T-38 training fighter shooting down the theoretically invincible F-22 Raptor in a combat training exercise—first kill documented on video ever.

It’s not the first time it has happened, however: An EA-18G—a modified F/A-18 F Super Hornet Block II—”got lucky” and killed another F-22 with an AIM-120 AMRAAM in a simulated combat exercise over at Nellis AFB. This is something that Stephen confirmed himself.

However, this time instead of a high-tech EA-18G, the killer plane was this:

A humble T-38 training jet, piloted by a trainer on a combat training exercise over an unidentified air space. And it killed this:

An F-22 Raptor, the most advanced air fighter in the planet.

Stephen says that this doesn’t mean much, except that—if it was really a T-38, the pilot was “either absurdly lucky or insanely skilled.” Here’s hoping all those Chinese and Russians flying next-generation fighters don’t get either lucky or skilled anytime soon.
The plane, dubbed Alpha Bravo, was slated to be shown off at Heathrow but now, according to British papers, it may be “cut into pieces” and sent to Dubai. Six of the planes are already in museums, and this puppy isn’t fit for flight anyway, as it wasn’t given the safety upgrade that the others got after that 2000 Paris crash.

Still, some people are sad to think of the last of the skinny-but-mighty supersonic passenger jets sitting on top of a cruiseliner with its wings literally clipped.
