Vudu Claims Largest HD Movie Library in the World, Bigger Than Blu-ray

7:00PM John Herrman | In a bid to set themselves apart from their increasingly inevitable competition, Vudu made a bold claim: , with 1100 HD movies, including about 150 in the fantastic HDX codec, they’ve got the largest HD movie library in the world, physical formats included. This sounds suspect until you consider that Netflix, Xbox Marketplace and Apple TV all offer under a thousand HD films, and that Blu-ray.com, which lists all available titles, only contains ~1030 discs, including some television shows. Sony’s New Vaio NS and CS Laptops Are (Almost) HD Ready

10:00PM Kit Eaton | The NS series of laptops is the latest in Sony’s Vaio update frenzy, and they’re machines aimed at delivering HD video. Hence the NS is available with a Blu-ray ROM drive and has a widescreen 15.4-inch Xbrite-Eco LCD for showing video off. Trouble is, the screen resolution is 1200×800, just enough to deliver 720p, but not enough for 1080p. Ditto for the cool new CS, which already made it to Japan. They both also have minimum battery lives of 1.5 hours—likely what you’ll get when you’re trying to watch that 2-hour Blu-ray movie. More overall feature info below: More »

No HD TV Shows On Australian iTunes

10:08AM Nick Broughall | One of the things I was planning on chasing up in the wake of the Apple devastation from overnight was whether or not Australia would be getting the HD versions of TV shows like the US. Turns out Gus over at Lifehacker did all the hard work for me though (thanks Gus!). HD fans will be disappointed to learn that no, we won’t be getting high-def versions of our favourite TV shows through iTunes. And while there’s a part of me that cries out at the injustice of it all, another part thinks that it’s probably a good thing, simply based upon the standard of internet speeds and data caps in this country. If you need high-def TV shows, there are plenty of options for downloading from the US iTunes store. Just make sure you’ve got plenty of data included in your internet plan. [Lifehacker] More »
