Peek Handheld Can Now View Images, Text Unlimitedly

The Peek handheld, recently named the Time's best gadget of 2008, has now gotten even better with two added features. While we knew unlimited text messaging was already coming to the device, it's a pleasant surprise to find out it can now view images too. Peek will show .JPG, .GIF, .PNG and .BMP file formats when you click the "View Image" option. Considering its price drop to $US80, this little gadget's becoming a better deal day by day. [

UPS Dumps Labels for Paper-Free Gauntlet-Cum-Printer

The gauntlet you see strapped to this guy's hand is HP's Handheld sp400 All-in-One, which is not only a hot fashion accessory, it scans barcodes and prints sorting info directly onto boxes (or someone's face, natch) with magic quick-drying ink, no paper label required. UPS has been testing it out at a ship centre in Orlando, where they used it on 40,000 boxes with zero errors.

Deconstructed DSi Reveals Beefier Processor Might Be Draining Battery Life

When the DSi specs were first revealed in front of the Nintendo money vault this past October, we noticed the battery life of the DS line went from "pretty awesome" to "WTF?" The brighter, larger screens were initially blamed for the 1-6 hour drop, but a field stripped DSi we discovered today hints the drain might be due to a beefier processor and speakers housed within.

While Nintendo may have sealed out DS piracy tools from use on the DSi, according to this humble YouTube clip, one Japanese hacker may have already wormed his way into the system, loading his own code despite security measures. (Unfortunately, he did not share his methods.) So while we could still be a long way from loading emulators and DS games at will, it's certainly not a bad sign when a new system gets cracked open within 3 days of its release. [GBAtemp]

Peek, the feature-sparse, email-only handheld will be adding unlimited text messaging to its service within the next few weeks. This will be done by taking advantage of the fact that most mobile phones can receive text messages that have been emailed and send text messages to email addresses. Sure, it isn't an elegant solution but it's a clever workaround and it gets the job done. The dual-camera DSi hits in Japan tomorrow, but thankfully, it seems that we occidents won't have to wait until "well into 2009" as originally thought. Nintendo pres. Satoru Iwata told Reuters that a fall or Christmas '09 release would likely be too late. Which leaves Summer or even before as the new launch window. Get your cat ready to be photographed now. Unnamed Developer Says DS Games Could Crash On DSi

Games that already play well with the DS could run into trouble on the DSi, causing many a developer headache, according to sources at Pocket Gamer. One unnamed developer told the publication that its studio is having problems getting one of its upcoming games compatible with the Dsi's new hardware. Though the game plays fine on the regular DS, it freezes up when played on the Dsi and so Nintendo won't certify it.

Sony Cancels PSP 3000 4GB Entertainment Pack
