Google initially rolled out free voice calls in Gmail (via Google Voice) as something they would offer through 2010. Now, “in the spirit of holiday giving”, they’ve extended free calling through all of 2011.
iOS only: Gmail users can make free Google Voice calls, but why should they have all the fun? Talkatone sets up free VoIP calls, over 3G or Wi-Fi, from your iPhone, iPod, or iPad through Google Voice for free.
Gmail recently added the ability to make phone calls from your inbox, and they’ve recently (silently) rolled out the ability to record incoming calls as well.
We’ve seen several third-party Google Voice iPhone apps make their way into the App Store, but we’ll be seeing Google’s official version soon too, according to a report by TechCrunch. Apparently, Apple may have even approved the app already:
Ever since GV Mobile was pulled from the App Store, we’ve been hoping for its return. And while Apple has not approved that particular app again, they did approve GV Connect. It’s three bucks, available now (only in the US) and looks great.
Earlier today, Apple published its App Store Review Guidelines and we giggled over how specific and peculiar they are in some cases. Developer Sean Kovacs probably wasn’t giggling along with us though, because he was too busy searching for answers: He wanted to know why his app, Google Voice Mobile, was rejected.
VoxOx, the decent-because-it’s-free way to make Google Voice calls on your desktop, is planning to beautify its look by ditching its heavy ’90s red and black design for something that is, well, modern and normal. Otherwise, it’ll work the same.
