George Lucas Imagines the Future of Cinema
The special edition versions of the Star Wars films and the recent prequels left many fanboys wondering if George Lucas maybe wasn’t the visionary filmmaker they had all worshipped and adored. But one aspect of Lucas’s vision that has never come into question is his ability to market the hell out of a franchise.
There have been plenty of edits that have tried to make sense of George Lucas’ Star Wars prequels, with varying success. But what happens when you give Topher Grace (Venom in Spider-Man 3 and star of That ’70s Show) the editing scissors? The results sound surprisingly inspired.
George Lucas has made an awful lot of money out of Star Wars, and while he’s still quite fanatical about his vision for the films, he’s nowhere near as fanatical as his fans are, according to the man himself. Also, Han totally always shot first.
The Phantom Menace is coming to 3D — but you already knew that. For my own sins, I’m going to see it this weekend. But if you’re a kid, though, George Lucas has a special trailer just for you. Relief or disappointment? Joy or sadness? Ecstasy or depression? The news that George Lucas has told the world he won’t be making another Star Wars film is bittersweet.
Dennis Muren is one of the founding team members of Industrial Light and Magic, Lucasfilm’s effects team since the days of A New Hope. With eight Academy Awards to his name, Giz AU had the chance to sit down with Muren at Lucasfilm in San Francisco to talk about the special content available on the Blu-ray releases, as well as what it was like to invent an entire special effects industry.
Matthew Wood is a 21 year veteran of Skywalker Sound, tasked with bringing all six Star Wars films up to a 6.1 channel audio mix for the Blu-ray release. We spoke with Wood about the process of remastering audio, working with Ben Burtt, and how some very Australian sounds became the ‘voice’ of the Geonosians.
With the release of Star Wars on Blu-ray this week, you’ll find three collections in stores to choose from. Only the nine-disc complete collection comes with any bonus content, and while some may want to avoid buying any prequel EVAR, owning unseen footage like Greedo’s real dialogue or a wampa attack on the Hoth base might make this unmissable. We went hands on with the extra content to see what’s what.
Following the rumours of more changes in the Blu-ray edition of Star Wars, a Lucasfilm spokesman has confirmed that some scenes will indeed be tweaked. For instance, Darth Vader screams in the video after the jump.
