I’ve got bad news for those who have checked out the website of my favourite hacker-turned-rapper, George “Geohot” Hotz, at any point between January 2009 and now: Sony has been granted the right to acquire your IP addresses.
Thanks to Geohot and fail0verflow’s PS3 exploits, Sony has ordered a restraining order to get all root keys/exploits taken offline, and to seize their computers for searching too. Gulp. [Geohot - Thanks Adriano!]
Switch on your PS3 and you’ll see Sony has pushed through the 3.21 firmware update a little early. Remember, this update removes the ability to run other operating systems, such as Linux.
This Thursday PlayStation 3 owners who install a firmware update will find that the ability to run other operating systems – such as Linux – will be removed. Most people won’t even notice, but hacker Geohot is already working on a fix.
GeoHot, one of the fathers of the iPhone’s jailbreak community, has just released the exploit that’ll let loose all sorts of promising PS3 hackery, just like he promised. We can’t wait for hackers to unlock the PS3′s power.
Geohot, the same hacker who first jailbroke OS 3.1.2, is now also the first to crack the 3.1.2 baseband. Previously, anyone who had unlocked their phone at version 3.0 or lower was fine as long as they were careful when upgrading, but anyone running 3.1 or higher was out of luck. Good news for anyone looking to unlock a newly purchased device. You’ll have to be patient, though. The exploit won’t be released until November 4. [BGR]
