Barnes & Noble, Gamestop Chief Pulls Some Shady Stock Sales

The only reason I knew Barnes & Noble owned Gamestop is that in high school I’d use my friend’s discount at Barnes & Noble all the time, even though he worked at Gamestop. Interesting right? More interesting: Leonard Riggio, chairman of B&N and director of Gamestop just dumped $US60 million in Gamestop stock. The last time he did this, it preceded bad financial news for Gamestop, so it doesn’t look good, to say the least.

An analyst told Barron’s that he’s “got a lot bigger stake in Barnes & Noble. Clearly he thinks selling GameStop is better than selling Barnes & Noble.” One could definitely say that. [Barron's via GamaSutra via Kotaku]

GameStop Squashes Its Bad Zune Habit

It was always strange seeing a video game retailer peddling MP3 players, but nevertheless GameStop has ceased selling Microsoft Zune portable media players. The breakup puts a small speedbump in Microsoft’s path to wrest marketshare away from Apple’s iPod line, and could slow the progress Zune made against Creative earlier this month. While the initial reaction might be doom-and-gloom for the Zune, the level-headed amongst us will remember that GameStop sells video games, not music players, and big box chains like Target, Best Buy and Wal-Mart will continue to stock it. GameStop said it will continue to sell Zunes until stock is dry, so if you’re looking for a deal you might want to stop by your local store. [The Street via Kotaku]

Looks like the fellows at Gamestop let the pricing for Nintendo’s Wii Wheel slip, and US$14.99 is the price you’ll be paying for each friend you have over on Mario Kart Wii day, (April 27th.) The game will retail at US$49.99, which includes one Wii Wheel to boot, but for multiplayer mayhem, you’re going to have to fork out that little bit more. Friends suck…not in a good way. Rumours about the impending doom of the 80GB PS3 have been going on for a while now, and it appears that Gamestop will not be receiving any more 80GB shipments from here on out. This news comes only weeks after rumours that Best Buy will also be dumping the higher-end model. GameStop Makes a Grab at the Halo 3 Money Train With Limited Edition Accessories

Because bleeding Halo fanatics out of $130 for the Halo 3 Legendary Edition really only scratches the surface of their (parents’) bank accounts, GameStop is stepping up to collect the remaining lunch money with a line of “limited edition” Halo 3 gear that drops Sept. 4: a pair of Spartan and Covenant 360 controllers and a wireless headset with a “uniquely Halo look”. On the cool side, the controller artwork was created by Todd McFarlane, and they each come with Halo figure from McFarlane Toys. The headset, however, is just an uglified version of the standard Microsoft one, with a Halo 3 logo slapped on it.

For $US60 a pop, the controllers aren’t a horrible value proposition, but to pay that much for a baby-shit-coloured headset should test the devotion of even the hardiest fanboy. â€“ Matt Buchanan
