Some notes: This is great news but there’s no word on whether the Rebel T1i, with <s>the same sensor</s> similar video capability, will get the upgrade. This upgrade doesn’t up the “full HD” 1080p to 60 frames per second—it stays at 30fps as far as I know. The auto-focus issue that we encounter in all DSLRs that shoot video is still present in this one, although Canon’s solution is currently better than others. And finally, the Nikon D90 lets you do some of this stuff now, as we saw, but as Canon alludes in its statement, the D90 isn’t full frame, and it’s just 720p.

The upgrade hits in early June, it’s just being announced today. [Canon]

Another PS3 Firmware update, another modest set of new features. In 2.70, there are only two you’ll notice: system-wide text chat and portability for your PlayStation Store video purchases.

You can learn more-or-less all there is to know about the new text chat feature from the short video below; it’s not an overly complicated system, and there aren’t that many ways to use it. Basically, you can chat, either one-on-one or in a group of up to 15, through the same single window. The chats run in the background, which is to say they can be used in-game, so PS3 owners can finally perform what have become the three holy sacraments of multiplayer gaming: strategising, taunting one another and hurling nonsensical racial slurs in no specific direction. It’s no voice chat, but could be workable with a keypad attachment or wired keyboard.

It’s generous to call the new video portability an additional feature; more accurately, we’ve seen a pointless prohibition lifted. Now your PS Store videos, whether purchased for the PSP or PS3, can be stored on an external HDD for later viewing, which is especially useful if you’ve got the wimpy 20GB model. The update should be available now—let us know how it works in the comments. [PS3 Blog—Thanks, Joel!]

The next day you sit down to watch it and about 5 minutes from the end, right at the moment of climax, the recording ends, because the networks couldn’t care less about you and run their programs over time. Well, now the Foxtel iQ2 (but not the iQ) will let you extend the recording time up to 20 minutes after each program. The upgrade – which is rolling out over the next couple of months – will add the ability to add 20 minutes to recordings through the Planner menu. At the moment, you can add up to 10 minutes to the start and end of recordings by going through the settings menu, so this development makes it a whole lot easier to ensure you don’t miss anything.

Other improvements included in the free update coming to the iQ2 are the ability to listen to the current TV channel when you enter the EPG, distinction between free and paid content for their On Demand service, the iQ2 will automatically return to the last TV station and volume level after being rebooted and you can no extend the audio delay up to 200ms.

Even though some people argue that having firmware-upgradable hardware means that you get products released before they’re ready, I for one love it when my hardware suddenly gets new features, without me having to fork out for special equipment. I am a bit bummed that the window for the update is up to two months though…

For one, album art now looks like it finally shows up in sizes larger than a postage stamp (half a stamp, actually). Also added is a memo/drawing app for stylus doodling, enhanced video controls, auto-rotating images and the ability to schedule recordings of FM Radio here in the states and DMB radio/TV in Korea.
