That was fast. It's barely Nov. 21 and the iPhone 2.2 update is here, all 246MB of it, as promised. Included in the update, according to the release notes and as we'd heard, are all the new Google Maps features we've been waiting for like Street View and walking directions, over the air podcast downloads, mail enhancements, Safari fixes, improved sound quality for visual voicemail, fewer dropped calls (again), and more. Grab it now.

Apple TV 2.3 Update Breaks Boxee, Other Hacks

Posted by John Mahoney at 8:40 AM on November 21, 2008

Apple TV updates generally always wipe away all third-party software you may have installed, but usually, most things can just be re-installed. Not so with yesterday's 2.3 version update however, which has closed the door used to install software like Boxee via a USB patchstick. So if you love your Boxee like we do, hold off on installing version 2.3 (and don't forget to turn off auto-update). A thread on Boxee's forums is tracking the issue, where a fix will hopefully be announced. [Boxee]

New Zune Game Has a Curious 'Touch' Option, According to Man With Gun

Posted by John Herrman at 8:34 PM on November 20, 2008

Those new games that came with the 3.1 firmware are swell and all, but they're not deciding features. Well, a strapping, brusque, heavily armed young man has brought to our attention that the Checkers app contains a dummy 'Touch' option, leaving us a mysterious clue — to something. That something, while it could be new, touchy Zunes from the future, is more likely one of these less-exciting things: either a bizarre example of the lazy porting of a mobile game or evidence that the planned integration of Zune software into Windows Mobile will extend beyond the music interface.

Manual Firmware Upgrade for Impatient G1 Owners

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 2:00 AM on November 2, 2008

If November 11th seems like way too long to wait for T-Mobile's RC29 upgrade for the G1, there is a way to manually force an upgrade. It's awfully easy, too: just download the update, move it over to a MicroSD card, and the hard work is pretty much done.

Dealzmodo Hack: Juice Up Your Canon Digital Camera With CHDK

Posted by John Herrman at 6:00 AM on October 31, 2008

Digital cameras are generally closed platforms, built and programmed under the assumption that they would never be modified. To get more features, you pay more for different firmware, even though the guts are mostly the same. Canon didn't batten down their hatches quite enough. The result is CHDK, a full-featured OS substitute that runs from your memory card and unlocks the tremendous unrecognised potential of most Canon A-series and SD Elphs plus several others—for free.

Dear iPhone Users, We Somehow Still Don't Know that You Want Cut and Paste

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 11:00 AM on October 26, 2008

AT&T is circulating a survey among some of its longer-term iPhone users with a checklist of features they'd like to see. It's a follow-up to a similar survey a few months back, and apparently also serves to judge reactions to the 2.1 firmware. Some of the most regular complaints make the list, including picture messaging through MMS, landscape mode for email, a user-replaceable battery, and the all-mighty cut and paste. The survey probably doesn't imply any kind of imminent changes, but it's nice to hear that AT&T is trying to listen to what we've all been screaming for so long. [AppleInsider]

PSP Firmware 5.01 Out Now

Posted by John Mahoney at 1:02 AM on October 24, 2008

The 5.01 PSP software is now available for download, pleasing mostly those with 8GB or 16GB Memory Stick Pro Duo cards that don't work with the new PlayStation Store update found in version 5.0. As reported, there is no fix for the funky interlacing lines (feature!) found on the new PSP 3000's LCD.
