New Wolverine Trailer Looks To Make Up For X-Men III

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 4:00 PM on December 17, 2008

Looks like there's something for everybody in the new X-Men Origins: Wolverine film: Explosions for the guys, Hugh Jackman beefcake for the ladies, and the inevitable mountains of merchandising for the kids. This is now wrestling with Star Trek for the number three spot on my list for most exciting movie of 2009, right behind Watchmen and Terminator Salvation. Looks like another bumper year for films in 2009...

Die Halloween TiVo! Die!

Posted by Sean Fallon at 5:15 AM on October 23, 2008

The 10th installment of arieScope's annual Halloween short film just might be its best. TiVo is the star of the show this year, and the video does a good job of exposing its dark side. At first TiVo just wants to get to know you—learn your preferences to create a customised TV-watching experience. Careful though—TiVo is sensitive. Friendship turns to an obsession, obsession leads to jealousy, jealously leads to cat murder and cat murder leads to...well, you'll see. Bwahahahaha! [ariescope via Zats]

Mini Slasher Musical Movie Inspired by Macs Vs PCs Debate

Posted by Kit Eaton at 10:15 PM on October 22, 2008

Forget the old Macs Vs PCs rap and its slightly worn-out ilk, this has to be my new fave geek-inspired musical tribute. If only for its Dusk Till Dawn-alike transformation into a slasher gore-fest after a few minutes. Seriously—beating someone to death with a MacBook? Strange stuff. There's just one flaw taking the shine off its geek status: the iPhone doesn't have a flash, guys! [YouTube Thanks David!]

Giant Photography Captures Landscape-Sized Landscapes

Posted by Mark Wilson at 4:00 AM on October 1, 2008

When you hear about a camera that's the size of a trailer, you figure it's a novelty used by a struggling artist looking to make a name. But watching this clip that explores the giant photography of John Chiara, you realise he's not just a salesman exhibiting a clown camera. He's an artist who painstakingly sets up a shot that's balanced with car lifts, controls the exposure by placing his hand over parts of the lens and then develops the film in a sewage pipe. And the results are pretty extraordinary. This clip documents Chiara's complete process and it runs about 7 worthwhile minutes. Load it up when you've got the time. [via Neatorama]

How Criterion Hones Its Restoration Magic for HD

Posted by Adam Frucci at 2:00 AM on September 26, 2008

Lee Kline, the Technical Director at The Criterion Collection, was in Italy. He had tracked down and original print of Il Posto, the classic 1961 Ermanno Olmi film, and he needed a digital master of it. The problem? It was far too valuable and delicate to ship to the States, so he had find a local studio to handle the transfer for him.

Sitting down in the lab, the local technician started the process of loading the film up, running it through the incredibly expensive machine to create a 2K super-high-def digital copy for Lee to take back to the States with him. The technician was deftly handling the irreplaceable film and the machine with both hands. All the while, a cigarette dangled from his lips. Lee, neither the owner of the print nor an employee of the lab, could only sit back and bite his tongue, hoping no wayward chunk of smoldering ash would find its way onto the decades-old piece of film. You could call it one tense moment in a film nerd's life.

Behind the IMAX in The Dark Knight

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 9:00 AM on July 20, 2008

One of the many exciting aspects of The Dark Knight is how the movie incorporated IMAX shots. Friends who watched the film have called the shots absolutely stunning and incredibly immersive; another reason why this is the Best. Movie. Ever. Having yet to see it, I can only sigh wistfully and aggregate information on how it was done. Popular Mechanics has a great write-up of the challenges in shooting with an IMAX camera, including a behind-the-scenes video on how the action came together.

It's been a while since we showed you a new clip of Wall-E, so it'll please you to know that over at Slashfilm they've got one, apparently shown during ABC's screening of Finding Nemo. We won't spoil it by telling you much, but there's some Eve in there too and a great demo of some Newtonian physics in action: check it out, and remember the movie's due the 27th this month. Hollywood Attacking Film Grain For Blu-ray

Posted by Mark Wilson at 11:31 PM on May 22, 2008

For me, the first "ooooh" moment when I got my first HDTV was watching SportsCenter...and I don't even watch sports. Never before had I seen such a crisp, vibrant image in my life. It didn't look real. It looked more than real.
