EzyDVD Is Alive, Offering Some Good Deals

10:30AM Nick Broughall | EzyDVD is back from the dead. In late January it was bought by Franchise Entertainment Group - the same company that owns Video Ezy and Blockbuster in Australia – for a paltry $10 million. And while that may not be the most exciting news you’ll read on a Monday morning, it does mean that the company has a crapload of DVDs that they are offering nice and cheap online. They’ve got some nice deals on their site at the moment that could be worth checking out if you have some spare change lying around… [EzyDVD] More »

EzyDVD Goes Into Receivership

4:37PM Nick Broughall | According to the ABC, EzyDVD has gone into receivership today. They’re hopeful that they’ll be able to save the company from complete destruction, and blame their current predicament on trading losses and lacklustre sales. But I guess that means that we won’t be seeing their digital movie store happening any time soon, if ever. Here’s hoping they manage to stay afloat in these tough economic times – even though they don’t really venture too far below the RRP for their movies, they do have a pretty extensive selection, and their Beat the Bomb sales are always good value… [ABC] More »

EzyDVDs Online Movie Store Put On Hold, Potential Customers Destined To Become Pirates

2:30PM Nick Broughall | So it hasn’t been a good week for Australian online entertainment seekers. First of all you’ve got movie studios suing iiNet because they didn’t stop their customers from pirating movies and TV shows (well, they’re not ninjas). And now Andew Colley over at Australian IT is reporting that EzyDVD’s online movie download store, which was to rise from the ashes of ReelTime TV, has been put on hold thanks to the struggling economy. The plans for an online store haven’t been canned completely (fortunately), but this is a real blow for online entertainment in this country, even though the service was probably going to be restricted to PC-based viewing through proprietary software. As I’ve stated before, the only options we have to legitimately download movies and TV shows in Australia are through iTunes and BigPond, which each have their own restrictions. So, here’s a crazy idea I’d like to put forward to all the movie studios who think suing ISPs is the answer. Take the money you’re spending on lawyers and invest it in EzyDVD’s EzyDownload service. Let’s get this thing running sooner rather than later. Because no matter how many people or ISPs you sue, you’re not going to make the slightest dent in piracy until we have a few attractive, legal options on the table. EzyDVD To Launch Video Download Service From Ashes Of ReelTime.TV

8:50AM Nick Broughall | Video downloading in Australia sucks. We used to have Reeltime, but through a combination of factors it went bust. That leaves BigPond, which unless you’re prepared to pay for Telstra’s exorbitant broadband fees, just isn’t worth the money. A glimmer of hope was announced yesterday, with EzyDVD planning on launching a download service called EzyDownload in September this year. It will use the infrastructure left in place with the demise of Reeltime, but improved to work better. They’ve also announced that they’re working with ISPs around Australia to have their movie downloads counted outside of the cap limit, ensuring that customers don’t have to pay twice for the same thing, which is one of the benefits of BigPond Movies for Telstra broadband users. Of course, the biggest question will be surrounding content – they claim they’ll have stuff from major Hollywood studios, independents and music companies for both download-to-rent and download-to-own. Having a decent library of titles will be imperative to success, as will price, which hasn’t been announced yet. The full press release is below the fold. We’ve got our fingers crossed that this will be the start of something good… More »

Dealzmodo: More HD DVD Savings At EzyDVD

3:49PM Nick Broughall | Don’t want to flog a dead horse, but if you’re one of the few people buying up HD DVDs on the cheap, EzyDVD is selling movies cheaper than you can buy them on DVD. It’s an exclusive offer for people who already bought bargain HD DVDs from them, but I don’t think it will matter. It’s also limited to 24 hours before it goes public, so get in early. [EzyDVD] More »
