iPhone to Cost US$990 in Russia: Yakov Smirnoff Has New Material

Posted by Sean Fallon at 8:00 AM on August 26, 2008

If you thought this post was going to contain a "in Soviet Russia" joke--think again. Besides, spending a whopping US$990 on an iPhone is hardly a laughing matter. Actually, the price is a bargain compared to the 600,000 or so iPhones that have hit the market through unauthorised sales--but it is still well out of the budget of your average Russian citizen.

Freewheeler Speaker Can Be Rolled Around: Yeah, That Makes it Worth US$21,000

Posted by Sean Fallon at 11:30 AM on August 9, 2008

The Freewheeler speaker features a frequency response of 52 - 21,000 Hz, a 112dB output, a built-in FM receiver, a battery life of 8 hours and a wireless range of 656 feet-- but I'm having trouble figuring out what makes it worth US$21,000. Is it the fact that it is roughly the size of a Mazda Miata tire (only thicker) and can be rolled around? Because I'll be dammed if I'm paying that much for something I have to push. Still, 8 morons spent US$1000 bucks on that stupid iPhone app so there is no telling what people will drop big money on.

Study: Average Mac Computer Price More That Twice That of Average PC

Posted by Adam Frucci at 4:15 AM on August 7, 2008

Fanboys, get your commenting fingers warmed up. A new study shows that, on average, the cost of a Windows PC is half that of an Apple computer. According to data collected by the NPD group, the average Windows notebook goes for US$700, while the average Apple laptop costs above US$1,500, dropping a mere US$59 in the last two years. And that's nothing compared to desktop computers.

Embedded Spinning Globe Doesn't Make a Watch Worth US$550,000

Posted by Adam Frucci at 8:10 AM on August 5, 2008

I'm no watch expert, but I'm pretty sure there's no amount of doodaddery in the world that would make a watch worth over half a million dollars. But hey, that didn't stop the Hysek Colosso from trying!

Updated: Dell Hybrid Will Cost $999 In Australia; Why do They Hate Us?

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 12:42 PM on July 30, 2008

UPDATE: Turns out that the Australian Hybrid machines are higher specced than their US cousins - So rather than hating us, Dell actually love us by giving us better hardware. For a full list of differences, you can check out the Dell websites, but we get 2GB RAM and a 320GB hard drive instead of 1GB and 250GB. The same spec upgrades go for the Latitude PCs as well...

We saw the Dell Hybrid announcement come from the US overnight, and its US$499 price tag was actually pretty exciting for a desktop computer. Of course, the computer was pretty exciting itself - 80% smaller, using 70% less power and packed in 95% recycleable packaging.

But now that the pricing for Australia has been announced, some of that excitement has quickly worn off.

If you're interested in greening up your desktop PC with one of these bamboo-cased wonders, you may need to start saving, as Dell in Australia have the starting price set at $999 - almost double the US price. The US$499 equates to $525 on today's exchange rate.

Obviously the exchange rate isn't everything when it comes to pricing - there's also the whole 'economies of scale' thing - Dell are going to sell a lot more of these in the US than they will in Australia (just based on populations), so they can afford to reduce the profit margin over there. But double the price? That's a bit rich, isn't it?

Most Expensive iPhone App Champion: MyAccountsToGo Costs More Than an Unsubsidised iPhone

Posted by Jason Chen at 11:00 PM on July 24, 2008

At US$449, MyAccountsToGo Dynamics GP and MyAccountsToGo SAP BusinessOne are the most expensive iPhone Apps available as of right now. It's under the Finance category and is designed for sales, marketing and finance people to access their transactions, statements, and other corporate terms that we have no clue about. Since the most we know about "business" is "business time", we can't say whether or not the US$449 is worth the cash, but we do know that you should buy both apps and just make it an even US$898. There's a free version if you want to know what the excitement's all about. Just don't accidentally buy the paid version.

Three iPhone Carriers That Make AT&T Look Like a Deal

Posted by John Mahoney at 4:10 AM on July 16, 2008

When Steve announced the iPhone 3G on stage at WWDC, one of the more interesting tidbits was the mention of a locked-in maximum price of US$199/US$299 in every launch country. But if you listened closely, you would have heard the key qualifier: "almost every country." Some deviation from the U.S. price is unavoidable, which is why Steve hedged his statement, but users in three countries in particular--Canada, Belgium, and Spain--are getting taken out back and walloped, each in their own special way.

Krell Papa Dock Combo Costs Four Grand, Makes Your 96kbps Tracks Sing

Posted by John Mahoney at 3:45 AM on July 10, 2008

Audiophile megabrand Krell's Papa Dock (companion to the US$1500 Kid Dock, which snaps into its new daddy) boosts the Kid's output to 150 watts, sports a gigantic power supply along with isolated stereo channels, and will set you back another US$2500 on top. I would say our jury's still out on spending US$4000 on serious audiophile gear to amplify a consumer-level source input, but this thing looks like it could take a bullet for you, if that's your thing. And naming your product after a brutal Haitian dictator is always a great way to stir up some interest. [Krell]

$20,000 Spy Camera Disguised as Garbage Thrown Out With The Trash

Posted by Sean Fallon at 8:40 AM on July 2, 2008

A spy camera hidden in a black back beside a notorious UK "fly-tipping" (or illegal waste dumping in the King's English) hot spot was recently thrown out by local workers with the other garbage. Apparently, this operation was so top secret that the workers in question did not need to know the details before being sent off to pick up the trash. To make matters worse, the camera has been valued at somewhere between US$14 and US$20,000. Basically, its just a hilarious waste of taxpayer money illustrated using equally hilarious British terminology. [Telegraph via Digg]

AD88 From Alfred Dunhill a Pointless Waste of Piano-Black Finish

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 9:20 PM on June 23, 2008

Whenever I see some high-end retailer flogging non-core business objects, I wrinkle up my nose in disgust. Chanel, of the non-Cylon No. 5, has been the most visible company to do this with its bikes, skis, and now fishing gear, and this is British gentleman's outfitters, Dunhill's, take on it. The AD88. Not only does it take my initials in vain, but it is almost US$4,000-worth of iPod dock, digital radio and CD/DVD player that, at almost US$4,000 (I guess you tip the doorman the remaining US$5 when you walk out of the shop with it) makes fools of us all.
