Sony's PRS-700 Reader Adds Touchscreen, Frontlight

Posted by John Mahoney at 9:18 AM on October 3, 2008

Sony brought out a new Reader tonight in NYC that adds a six-inch touch screen to the E-ink reader, as well as slimming down the case and adding a built-in frontlight. With the touchscreen readers can enter text with a stylus on a full-screen QWERTY for searching, adding notes and annotations to book marks, or just flipping the page with a stylus or finger swipe. It'll hit at the end of October for around $US400. Hit the jump for more impressions.

Kindle Gets US$100 Discount in Amazon, Chase Promotion

Posted by Kit Eaton at 12:49 AM on August 27, 2008

The Kindle is currently getting a US$100 discount if you get the Amazon Rewards Visa card and buy a Kindle with it: that's a 28% discount on the list price of US$359. Good for you if you're about to buy a Kindle, and obviously will push the sales of the Kindle. It also raises a couple of questions: is the Kindle not selling as well as Amazon would like, hence the large discount, or is this tied to ditching stock before the possible Kindle 2.0 update we've mentioned before, and that's gathering momentum online? What's your take on this, chaps? [AlleyInsider via NewLaunches]

How to Transplant a Sony Reader Display Into a Dying Kindle

Posted by Sean Fallon at 9:50 AM on August 23, 2008

The mad scientist behind this hack was faced with a problem. His beloved Amazon Kindle had a shattered screen and was all but dead. Distraught, he thought to himself: "what if I could sacrifice a Sony reader and perform and unholy cross species screen transplant? Yeah, it just might work because the e-ink screens on both devices are nearly identical."

Old News Alert: Dymocks Sells the Iliad eBook Reader

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 2:18 PM on February 11, 2008

iliad.pngI just realised that while I was looking back through the archives for eBook readers for the post on eReader.com's 17000 non-DRM'd eBooks that nobody actually covered Dymocks' launch of the Iliad eReader and eBook store last December for Giz AU. Well, rest assured, I'm here to cover all the old news that didn't get covered before I started.

The Iliad, like the Amazon Kindle and Sony Reader, uses e-ink technology to display easy-to-read text on its screen. It's about the same size as an A5 sheet of paper, weighs 389 grams and has 128MB of internal storage, which is upgradeable via the SD card slot.

Unlike those two readers, you can make notes on the Iliad's screen using its stylus, and it plays back a wide range of ebook formats, including the mobipocket format used by Dymocks.

The downside of this wonderful (and old) news is that it costs $899. Oh, and Dymocks aren't really offering their ebooks cheaply, either. So, while we finally have an ereader option here in Australia that uses the e-ink technology, you need to pay through the nose for it. Are you really that surprised?

Get Over 17,000 Non-DRM eBooks From eReader.com

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 9:55 AM on February 8, 2008

sony_reader2.jpgAhh, DRM. The bane of online existence. Your days could well be numbered, at least in the eBook sense, with online eBook retailer eReader announcing that they will be releasing more than 17,000 books for sale without DRM restrictions.

The site made the decision after it realised that non-DRM'd books from unknown authors were actually selling better than DRM'd books from famous authors. Makes sense to us, now all we need is for someone to explain all that to the people in the music industry.

Sony Reader Goes Total Stereotype for Valentine's Day

Posted by Mark Wilson at 1:52 AM on January 29, 2008

image2-1.jpgSony is offering both the colour pink and absurd romanticism in a special US$299 V-Day Sony Reader Bundle. Coming with a pink "Cross Your Heart" Reader skin and a coupon for 14 Harlequin Special Releases... let's just say that we'd never date anyone who accepted this gift in earnest. For those interested in what a real lady (my wife) thinks about the Sony Reader, hit up her impressions here. For the record, she's still reading with it nonstop.

Amazon Kindle Is an Ugly Snowspeeder of Contradictions

Posted by Matt Buchanan at 5:30 AM on November 22, 2007

kindlenyts.jpgOh, sweet contradiction—Jeff Bezos in open letter to Author's Guild, 2002:

"When someone buys a book, they are also buying the right to resell that book, to loan it out, or to even give it away if they want. Everyone understands this."
