The DSi’s camera is probably the lowest-quality camera device you can buy today that can still counts as a camera. But it’s still a camera, and your kids might enjoy making their photos slightly more interesting than the default shots.

Thrustmaster’s $US20 kit offers variable colour filters, a macro lens, a telephoto lens and a wide-angle lens. It’s great for illustrating the fact that lenses change the way a camera works, since it’s not quite something that clicks solidly in your brain until you see it first-hand. The DSi shatters and fragments, which is more effective at maiming and disabling a target. On the other hand, the PSP Go! remains whole, for greater penetration through tough surfaces. Both, however, are fun to look at.

Far from an honest ballistics test, the shoot(ing), staged by French gaming magazine Amusement, was just an opportunity to snap a few stunning photos. Which is fine! And which they did!

Nyko’s Zoom Lens For The DSi Just Seems Like Overkill

Not to sound phallic, but things keep growing bigger on the DSi. Nintendo confirmed the new 4.2-inch screen DSi LL earlier today, and now Nyko’s 8x optical Zoom Case is finally getting pushed out the door.

What we didn’t know before was the price…it’ll be $US25. But, uh…the DSi only has a 0.3MP camera, so this still just seems silly to me. [Nyko via Kotaku]

Jumbo Nintendo DSi Coming For Old Folks

A new DSi? Oh, of course — it’s only been a year since the original launched, and we’re talking about Nintendo. Nikkei says a fresh DSi is coming with a 4-inch screen, for the same price as the current one.

So far, the slightly embiggened (three-quarters of an inch) DSi is only destined for Japan, and it’s targeted at geezers who want a slightly bigger screen. Since it’s gonna be the same price, we’re guessing all of the other specs—like display resolution, even—will be the same, if this thing comes out. And again, since we’re talking about Nintendo here, it doesn’t slay us with surprise. [Nikkei, Livedoor via Kotaku]

Nintendo Just Keep Targeting Those People Who Don’t Really Care About Games

God knows what Nintendo’s marketing strategy is. My guess is that it involves picking a group that couldn’t give a rat’s ass about gaming, and then try and get them to buy their stuff. I guess it works for them, but it really does seem weird. Their latest strategy is to let customer’s at Toni & Guy’s flagship hairdressing salon in Paddington in Sydney play the DSi while they get their hair done.

The promotion – if you can even call it that – is running from today to November 30, and includes the ability to check out the DSi hardware, as well as some of the latest games, while some guy does your hair and charges you a small fortune for the privilege. Somehow I don’t think many of you guys will be checking this out, but if you do, let us know if it was worth it…

Pink and metallic blue colours, people. If that doesn’t inspire you to drop whatever you’re doing right this second to head down to the shops and buy yourself a new Nintendo handheld, you must be a fool.

Although considering the new colours won’t hit shelves until September 24, I guess if you do rush down the shops today, you’re an even bigger fool. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t, I guess…

Latest DSi Security Update Barely Breaks A Pirate’s Stride

You thought that you had to choose between your pirated games homebrew and Facebook? Nope, the DSi already appears to have been cracked again.

While the latest DSi firmware 1.4 tempted users with social networking on Facebook, it also blocked infamous R4 cartridges, a popular way to load pirated software on the DS/DSi. But according to this clip, Nintendo’s efforts were again futile, as pirates have already circumvented new security measures.

The moral of the story: The DSi, even with its aggressive PSP-style updates, has no more chance of preventing piracy than the DS. [Kotaku]
