Are Gadgets Getting Plainer or Will Crazy Hardware Design Come Back? The Experts Speak

Posted by Adrian Covert at 5:00 AM on July 23, 2008

We all know minimalism is currently king in the gadget design world. Fancy shapes, switches and knobs have been eschewed in favour of clean and simple designs that take a backseat to interface. So we asked Fake Steve Jobs, Bruce Sterling, Daniel Will-Harris and Yves Behar whether or not they thought there would be a counter-minimalist backlash.

Solid Gold Louis Vuitton Flash Drive Trimmed With Your Choice of Ostrich or Alligator

Posted by Jennifer Hooker at 3:22 AM on November 10, 2007

LV%20flash%20drive.jpgLuxe designer Louis Vuitton is designing a USB Flash drive for geeks who need a side of haute couture with their gadgets. The thumbdrive features a sexy curved body, and will be made of white or yellow gold with ostrich or alligator accents. Like the designer purses, the flash drive manages to incorporate Louis' signature lock into the design, as it requires a key to release the locked cap. I'm not sure if this provides any added security, since the key dangles from the device itself. The concept will also include either a digital or an analogue clock as well. No word yet on storage capacity, availability or doubtlessly exorbitant cost. [Newlaunches]

Posted by Charlie White at 6:10 AM on August 18, 2007

starck_watches.jpgWe're always a sucker for designer Philippe Starck's latest creations, and here's a couple of watches he adds to his Fossil collection that have a strange cantilevered look we haven't seen before. Check out those hands, placed on that hanging face at an odd angle, making them look positively peculiar. Well, what would you expect from Philippe S+arck, a guy who takes out the "t" in his last name and replaces it with a plus sign?

Posted by Ben Longo at 3:14 PM on August 16, 2007

Watch%20Man.pngPingMag got a one-on-one interview with Yasushi Kimura, founder of the Japanese design firm Sea Hope. And for as awesomely insane as their watches are, his responses were interesting and and not crazy at all. When questioned about peoples fascination with LED's he responded

"Simply put, people like light and illuminations - it just enhances any accessory; especially in Japan, where it gets dark so early.

New Boston Acoustics Speakers Can Hide In Plain Sight

Posted by Wilson Rothman at 3:48 AM on August 14, 2007

soundware.jpgThere are generally two kinds of speakers, the extra-big-ass kind that cost trillions and are meant to be regarded like fine if butt-ugly sculptures, and then the speakers most people actually want, that cost a reasonable amount and blend in, camouflaged with their domestic surroundings. Boston Acoustics today launched several sets of speakers of the second order, sporting a brand new BA logo.

The new Horizon stereo and surround sound systems come in Midnight with Onyx grilles or Mist with Silver grilles, but can be tricked out with six other grille colors using the Boston Acoustic "Personal Options Plan": in addition to Onyx and Silver, you can get Glacier, Rosebud, Pearl Gray, Caramel, Chocolat and Chili Pepper. Prices range from a couple hundred for a pair to $800 for a full-on deluxe 5.1 setup.

Cooler still, the small indoor/outdoor SoundWare speakers ($100 a piece) can mount in all sorts of places, angling every which way. They come in seven colors, and can be painted whatever color you damn well please.

Bang and Olufsen Beolab 3 Computer Speakers Cost More Than Your Computer

Posted by Adam Frucci at 1:00 AM on August 11, 2007

Beolab3.jpgBang and Olufsen, that Danish designer that loves to charge way too much for oftentimes oddly-designed electronics, is really living up to their reputation with the new Beolab 3 speakers. These portable computer speakers pump out 250 watts of power in 180 degrees, which is impressive. The look is, well, OK, I guess, depending on your taste for "unique" design. The price, on the other hand, is tough to justify: $3,200. For computer speakers. These guys make Bose look like the cheap option. [New Launches]

Nokia Prism Line Is Official, Still Goofy Looking

Posted by Seamus Byrne at 10:41 AM on August 8, 2007

nokiaprisms-sm.jpgI don't know how carving a bunch of geometric lines in a phone helps a company "tap into the cultural zeitgeist," but that's what Nokia is claiming their now-official line of Prism phones does. The lower-end 7500 is your basic multimedia phone complete with music player (MP3/AAC/WMA), 2-megapixel camera and Opera Mini for web browsing via EGPRS/GPRS. The 7900 improves on its predecessor by offering dual band 3G/quad band GSM, a 2-inch OLED screen with "living wallpaper" that morphs based on your usage pattern and 1GB of internal storage. If mounds of triangles do it for you, you should be able to snag a 7500 for about $290 or a 7900 for $550. Full size image below the fold. [Nokia Prism Collection via CrunchGear]
