But iPhone users don’t have to worry, since 3.0.1 is no less hackable than 3.0.

The iPhone Dev Team put up a post detailing instructions on how to use the current versions of redsn0w and ultrasn0w on 3.0.1, and it’s pretty easy: Jailbreaking with redsn0w only requires you select the IPSW file for OS 3.0, and then you can use Cydia to install ultrasn0w and everything will be perfect in the land of semi-approved iPhone tinkering. Phew! [iPhone Dev Blog]

Here are the details.

• If you already have your iPhone jailbroken and unlocked, don’t try to update your smartypanties phone to iPhone OS 3.0. PwnageTool won’t unlock your iPhone. You have to wait until Ultrasnow is available for this.

• If you don’t need the unlock but want to upgrade to iPhone OS 3.0, go ahead. After upgrading, jailbreak your iPhone with PwnageTool 3.0, and keep using Cydia and your non-official iPhone apps.

• If you have an iPhone 3GS, this won’t work for you.

And like always, use it at your own risk. [Torrent file]

Remember how heaps of people couldn’t wait to get their hands on the so-called ‘Jesus-phone’ so bought it on the grey market, then jailbroke it so it would work in Australia? Well, reader Andrew was one of those people, and after some playing around with the new 3.0 OS and downgrading back to the current 2.2 software, he discovered that he suddenly had Vodafone’s visual voicemail working.

The clip above shows that he’s got it working, but for any of you who have the original iPhone handset and a Vodafone SIM card, here’s what Andrew did to get visual voicemail working:

1. I downloaded the iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw.
2. Put my iphone into DFU mode, opened itunes 8.2 (23) and selected the above ipsw.
(It did the normal, installed fine, but was bricked and I only could make emergency calls. The difference was instead of no signal, it had a signal from vodafone au.)
3. Put my iphone back into DFU mode. Opened itunes 8.2 (23) and selected iPhone1,1_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw. itunes came up with an error after the install.
4. Opened Pwanage Tool 2.2.1. Using simple mode, iphone, I selected Phone1,1_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw. Let it do its business.
5. Put the iphone back into DFU mode. Opened itunes 8.2 (23) and selected iPhone1,1_2.2_5G77_Custom_Restore.ipsw.
6. Had a look around the phone and noticed visual voicemail had shown up.
7. Using Cydia, I installed big boss prefs back on the iphone. I turned edge on then turned data roaming on.
8. I now have visual voicemail.

[Thanks Andrew!]

Cydia’s founder, 27-year-old Californian grad student Jay Freeman, will apparently charge about the same commission as Apple does to developers wanting to list their apps in the new Cydia Applications. A paid app store will not only reward developers for their efforts but possibly lead to a wider variety of non-Apple-approved apps. Apparently, more illicit app stores are in the works, including an adult-themed one, which we will of course examine at great length.

Ustream’s plan is still to get the app on the official App Store, which would make it much, much more accessible to the general public. The good news is that their latency from streaming to watching is pretty good (about 2-3 seconds), which is live enough to be called live. Not good enough, though, for having a conversation with.

When we tried it over Wi-Fi, the video quality was pretty acceptable for streaming video from a phone. There are a couple short sample videos here. You can actually make out the text if I get in close enough to the screen. What does this say? One, the iPhone 3G’s camera is decent enough to take video and the processor is fast enough to process and upload it. Two, we’re dying to get this in the App Store so everyone can try.

Another really cool feature is the live poll, which you can activate and have all your viewers vote on. It sends an email to your account address when you close the poll.

The tech is there, so all that’s left is for Apple to approve it. You can get it now by jailbreaking.
