Rockstar Games, the company behind Grand Theft Auto and Table Tennis, is supporting Movember this year by offering participants the chance to get their moustache immortalised in their upcoming game, Red Dead Redemption. That’s right, you and your mo could have a cameo in a video game!

To enter, you just need to register for Movember and register your email address on Rockstar’s Movember site. Then, at the end of the mo-growing month, you submit a photo of yourself to Rockstar. The best mo as judged by them will then feature as a cameo in Red Dead Redemption, which is due for release next year.

As I said, best competition ever.

If you haven’t yet picked up a copy of The Dark Knight on Blu-ray, you should probably do yourself a favour and hold off until next month. Because during November, Warner Bros are going to donate $1 from every sale of 31 specially marked Blu-ray films, including Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Hangover.

Considering Movember raises money for men’s health issues, in particular prostate cancer and depression, and the fact that most Gizmodians are men, this is a great initiative to raise money for a great cause, especially if it saves your life.

Warner puts the Mo in Movies

Warner Home Video is getting on board with Movember this year and doing its bit to change the face of men’s health, by helping to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer and depression in men.

In support of Movember, Warner is putting the Mo in movies through a range of Blu-ray titles. During November, thirty-one (31) Warner Home Video titles will be sporting a blue Movember moustache on their box covers, with every specially marked pack representing a $1 donation to Movember causes.

Mo Bros and Sistas will be able to enjoy classics such as The Hangover, Batman Begins, Heat and The Dark Knight, whilst simultaneously raising funds for Movember from the comfort of their living rooms. Each movie being available on Blu-ray will mean that the picture quality will be up to five times sharper than DVD and the sound will be up to three times better than DVD.

Warner Managing Director, Roger Clarke said, “As a company, we are thrilled to be helping Movember raise funds and awareness for men’s health. We want Australia to buy Blu and Save a Bro! Our Movember collection of Blu-ray releases makes it really simple to do so through any of our outlets across Australia. Moustaches and film have a well documented and celebrated history together with leading men and their moustaches gracing the screen since film began – icons such as Charlie Chaplin, Clark Gable, Peter Sellers, Burt Reynolds, Prince and, of course, Tom Selleck have firmly secured the Mo’s place in entertainment history.”

Movember Founder, Luke Slattery, continues, “Movember is all about doing something with your mates, for your mates. So, as well as growing a mo this year, we want all Mo Bros to get better at looking out and checking in with each other. If you haven’t seen a mate for a while, then get in touch and arrange a time to catch up. For this reason our partnership with Warner Home Video is a great fit as a night in with the boys watching a couple of Blu-ray’s is the perfect way to check in with your mates.”

Warner Blu-ray titles, supporting Movember, will be available from all leading Blu-ray retailers including JB HiFi, BigW and more.

Update: Here’s a list of the eligible flicks:

THE HANGOVER (25th November release date)
ENTER THE DRAGON
OUT FOR JUSTICE
Let’s instead focus on something good, like how the company is donating the equivalent of eight meals to the Feeding America Network for every completed download of Internet Explorer 8.

The program, called “Browser for the Better,” is connected to those wacky Dean Cain IE8 commercials that launched earlier this month.

And while the Dean Cain marketing effort will likely last forever thanks to the glorious wonder of the Internet, the charity portion of Browser for the Better only runs from June 10 to August 8. Don’t ask about the image. Apparently, for the meals to become viable, Microsoft had to truck in a bunch of artists so they could stack them into shapes resembling the Empire State Building and Golden Gate Bridge.
The Wall Street Journal profiled Bill Gates Sr. this weekend in preparation for his upcoming book, but the juiciest bits involve by far involved Bill Jr. For example, there’s the “water incident”:

The future software mogul was a headstrong 12-year-old and was having a particularly nasty argument with his mother at the dinner table. Fed up, his father threw a glass of cold water in the boy’s face.

“Thanks for the shower,” the young Mr. Gates snapped.

Oh no you didn’t! Now, where’s that spitfire in the I’m a PC ads? Who doubts that a cold glass of H2O in “I’m a Mac’s” face wouldn’t sell a few more laptops to paid actors at a conveniently well-lit Best Buys? Not me, that’s for sure, not me.

But back on point, this Bill Gates Sr. fella has led a pretty substantial, and quiet, life thus far. The 6-ft. 6-in. 83-year-old philanthropist helped found the Gates Foundation, which he oversees today side-by-side with his son. His quiet demeanor meant he often played peacemaker between Bill Gates Jr. and his mother, whose heated arguments ultimately led to that glass of water to the face (it was one of Sr.’s rare outbursts).

Senior was also there to court Steve Ballmer, and later to serve as legal counsel for Microsoft (his law firm later became MS’s biggest client).

His aforementioned role in philanthropy, however, is what impresses me most. The Gates Foundation, now a worldwide behemoth focused on global issues (remember those TED mosquitoes?), had humble beginnings:

In the early days, Mr. Gates Sr., who soon remarried, would scribble a few notes on the most-promising requests for donations. He would then put them in a cardboard wine box that he periodically sent to his son’s house. The box would come back with Bill Jr.’s responses. Mr. Gates Sr. would then reply to all the grant seekers, sometimes including a $1 million check with little more than a single-page letter of congratulations.

Mac, PC, Linux, Speak-n-Spell or otherwise, you can’t find fault in that. [WSJ]

Mitch Gewirtz of Michigan would like to give you his 17-inch PowerBook. For free. From Mitch:

Subject: I AM UP FOR THE CHALLENGE!

To whom it may concern,

I recently watched the new PC ad on television the other night about “Lauren” purchasing a laptop for under $US1000.00. It was a great advertisement targeting everyday PC users. My only concern is that I feel the computer “Lauren” chose will not provide an overall positive experience. I am asking for your assistance to help me locate “Lauren”. I am willing to give her my 17″ Mac laptop “FOR FREE” so she can decide which laptop is superior without putting a price tag on it.

I do believe everyone on this planet is “cool enough to be a Mac person”.

Sincerely,
Mitch Gewirtz

We of course wrote back to Mitch to gauge his level of seriousness in this matter. His response:

Absolutely! I am serious!

I believe my 17″ G4 powerbook is still more advanced than any PC out there today. It is a very healthy laptop that has given me a wonderful experience the last couple of years. I truly believe if “Lauren” had a chance to use this laptop she would change her mind.

Can you help me locate her?

While Apple fanboys are a dime a dozen, we like Mitch’s attitude, a guy willing to put his money where his mouth is (even if that money is invested in an older machine he may be planning to replace). So Mitch, Gizmodo would like to support you on your quest to gift Lauren your PowerBook. We’ve got your back, buddy.

Lauren, where are you? Drop us a line (you can find my email on the side of the page). Let’s make this love connection happen.

It’s clutter. Besides, I rarely carry any cash nowadays—the almighty debit card tackles all transactions. So whenever I see a Salvation Army Santa endlessly tingling his little bell, I keep on marching ’til I’m out of earshot. But those days are over. The Salvation Army is loading up Santas in the Dallas area with credit card machines that will beam money directly from your bank account and into their charitable coffers. The minimum donation via plastic is $US5.

Which means that, one, the no cash excuse will soon be gone forever, and two, even if there wasn’t a five-dollar minimum, giving anything less than five bucks when you bust out the plastic would’ve officially made you a dick anyway, so it’s an exceptionally shrewd manoeuvre. I think I actually feel somewhat violated by this, but how do you have hard feelings against a charity? I guess I am a dick.

To those who’d like to support a real world cause while defending the princess from Bowser’s latest kidnapping, this limited edition Pink Ribbon DS Lite raises money for the cancer charity Susan G. Komen for the Cure. For every unit sold, Nintendo passes $US5 to the organisation. $US5!!! Whoa. That’s big money!

I know, how can I talk bad about someone giving money to cancer research? So ungrateful! So taboo!

The sad fact is, as big of a failure as RED products may be (some projections show more money spent on advertising than goes to cancer research), most RED-participating companies are giving a lot more money per product to charity than Nintendo is here. Gap has passed on 50% of their profits on RED items and Apple has given 10% of the total price (probably their entire profit) on iTunes gift cards. And they’re just the tip of the iceberg.

Meanwhile, the company that is making $US1.6 million per employee is slapping a ribbon on a device, tossing spare change in the face a cause and probably netting more money because of it.

$US5 doesn’t even come close to Nintendo’s profits per DS.

This isn’t a donation. This is exploitation. Nintendo, you can do better.
