Han Solo In Carbonite USB Drive Was Too Good To Last

12:06PM Wilson Rothman | This USB drive featuring Han Solo frozen in carbonite was so cool (cute? weird?) that it sold out in five days, apparently before we could even write about it. I am a fan of the cartoony style crafted by jasonscreations, likely without the permission of Big George. All I can say is, I hope Jason makes more of ‘em. Meanwhile, the action figure of Solo’s woman in bounty hunter guise is not part of the deal, but since you can’t buy any of it, the point is moot. Jump for a closeup of the drive. LaCie Offers Unlimited Online Backups For a Year With Hard Drive Purchase

6:30AM Sean Fallon | LaCie, designers of some of the best looking hard drives around, are offering one full year of unlimited online data backup free of charge when you purchase any one of their external drives. Each drive will be bundled with Carbonite’s storage technology that promises to automatically back up the LaCie drive (when the computer is idle) “by finding new and modified files, encrypting them twice before leaving the original workstation, then transmitting them by HTTPS (SSL) to a secure data centre, where the information remains encrypted.” All-in-all, the package represents a $US50 value. The promotion is applicable to all drives purchased after October 15th and customers can start taking advantage the free online storage beginning next month. More »

Jar Jar Gets Locked in Carbonite Too: Long May He Stay There

8:15PM Kit Eaton | George probably deserved to be encased in Carbonite for corrupting the Star Wars Universe with Jar Jar Binks… but it’s waaaay more satisfying seeing the floppy-eared one himself frozen in the same state, unable to frolic and waggle his tongue. Its actually part of an Industrial Light and Magic display, near Lucas’s house, so maybe ILM think the same way too. [Geekologie] Photo: Pixdaus. More »

Carbonite backs up into Australia

8:08AM Angus Kidman | First questions first: why would you call an online backup service Carbonite? Apparently, company management wanted something more distinct than all the variants on backupmydatanow.com-type names that you usually see for this kind of service. It seems no-one realised that this would lead to lots of random Star Wars references, but you can’t have everything.Anyway, Carbonite, which has been running in the US since 2005, is now available locally for a fairly reasonable $59.95 a year. The big selling points are completely unlimited storage capacity (though you’d have to be careful not to blow your ISP limit using it) and totally automatic operation. Given how lazy practically everyone is about backup, it’s got to be worth considering. For now, it’s Windows only (XP and Vista), though a version for Mac OS X is scheduled sometime later this year. Han Solo Frozen in Carbonite Desk Reminds You That Someone Has it Worse

6:20AM Jason Chen | Hate doing your taxes? Balancing your checkbook? Grinding for loot in World of Warcraft? Just take a look at Han’s face to know that someone has it even worse than you. As painful as it is to look through all your receipts from the last year, it’s much worse to have all the cells in your body lowered to such a temperature that you make that face. You know the one. If you want one of these desks, and we bet you do, you’ll have to ask Tom Spina Designs to create one for you. Money will be involved. [Therpf via Boing Boing] More »
