They aren’t carton-lit like real matches, but these match candles ($US6 for four packs) are one way to up the ante on that Zippo-lighter guy we all know who thinks he’s so cool. (The other is lung cancer.)
What’s better than a Lego reproduction of the Kennedy Space Center? How about a scale model made with Lego-esque candles that’s engulfed in flame? At $US48 apiece, I don’t see it happening. [aplusrstore via BBG]
Here’s a tip: never, ever leave a big candle burning over your computer. Ever. [FailBlog]
A company called Nextreme Thermal Solutions recently demoed this LED—which shines brighter than the candle whose heat powers it—as first step in what I assume is a move toward bonfire-charged laser weapons. [Tech-On]
Kids nowadays are so showered with electronic goodies that I suspect a traditionally-lit birthday cake just wouldn’t cut the mustard for some of them. Luckily, over at Instructables they’ve got a recipe for DIY electronic “candles” that actually lets you blow them out. Its flickering LEDs are accompanied by a thermistor warmed above room-temp by a nearby resistor, and accompanied by a microcontroller. When you puff hard on the thermistor, the circuit senses the temperature drop and switches off some LEDs. Brilliant, but sadly it seems you can’t get extra wishes by blowing them all out at once. The demo video is undeniably funny though: a fake birthday part thrown by the builders.
You finally brought that man/woman of your dreams back to your space den, and you’re trying to seal the deal. May I suggest using this US$15 Spaceship Fragrance Oil Warmer, the geekiest love aid we’ve ever seen. Imported from far off galaxies and recommended by captains by the name of Kirk, Gordon, Solo and Zapp Brannigan, I’m not sure how you could go wrong except if you tipped it over and caused a chemical fire in deep space and your airlocks all blew out before you finished your business time. It may seem a little stupid, but if you are faced with a power outage, having a candle holder that doubles as a flashlight may prove useful. It can be used as a decoration, so you will never have to scrounge around in closets and cabinets to find it —plus should the 3 AA batteries die, you can just flip it over and use the candle end. Clever idea, but the style leaves a little something to be desired. Available for $US40. [Product Page via DVICE]
This Candle Holdem USB holder is one of those designs that really isn’t necessary, but is so cool we’d go out of our way to make use of them. It’s essentially a key hook set for your USB drives that holds five and lights up when they’re plugged in. Plug in all five and you’ve got a makeshift candleabra, which we first thought were little space invaders. If anyone ever made something like this, we’d be on it faster than Master Chief on Cortana (if she were real). [Yanko Design]
Blue and white flames are so yesterday—red, green and orange are where it’s at now. And by replacing standard candle wax with various minerals and crystals, Rainbow Moments Candles can produce these flames in the comfort of your own home. You can get them as both birthday candles or the decorative kind, or buy colored lamp fluid and make your camping trip that much more exciting. [Rainbow Moments via Cool Hunting]
