Apparently, local libraries are the biggest DVD rental stores in the US. According to a survey released by the Online Computer Library Centre, US public libraries lend an average of 2.1 million movies per day. That’s more than Netflix, Redbox and Blockbuster.
Blockbuster? We knew it was dying, courtesy Redbox, Netflix and the changing ways people consume their entertainment, but when will it finally expire? Probably next year, according to one analyst and the company’s own balance sheet.
When your CEO thinks popping the Netflix disc in the Wii is more difficult than driving to a store to physically rent a disc (and then returning said disc), that might be a sign that your company isn’t exactly forward-thinking.
What does the dying death spasm of a failing brick and mortar video rental store look like? This picture is a hint. Blockbuster sells books now. [Flickr - Thanks, Travis]
Oh, I hope whatever exec came up with this idea scores a huge bonus. Blockbuster is piloting a new program in the US that will load DRM’d movie rentals onto an SD card from a kiosk. The future!
