The controller itself is obviously mostly comprised of rice, but the D-Pad was constructed from naturally grey Konnyaku (Japanese yam cake), while lemon peel, green apple peel, red pepper and dyed blue egg white make up the four colourful buttons.

And from the star jelly pudding to the mini carrot cakes, it all looks delicious…until you notice the large wall of teriyaki Spam. Why would Laura Bento dare do such a thing??
The original $US50 Bento software—named after Japanese-styled lunchboxes that have designated spaces for different items—is intended for use at home for everyone from soccer mums to gadgetheads, whereas its older brother, FileMaker Pro, is used mainly in offices by larger companies. The Bento application, like both databases, helps you keep tabs on all your stuff—including your address book, calendars, events, projects, logs and lists—all organized in one application.

Supposedly, what makes Bento so simple to use is that it automatically syncs your address book, mail, iCalendar and other data directly from your computer to your phone. For those who own the $US50 Bento software, it’s supposed to be easier for you to input data into your phone without having to type everything out on the touch-QWERTY-keyboard on your phone. For example, if you would like to store a specific recipe on your phone, you could simply just copy and paste it into Bento on your computer, drag and drop an accompanying photo into the entry, and then sync it to your phone. Moreover, because FileMaker, Inc. is a subsidiary of Apple, the Bento application is apparently intuitive to those who are familiar with Mac layouts and style, with iTunes-esque formatting and similar search bar. Unfortunately for PC users, using the Bento software coupled with the application is only available for Mac users for $US4.99. [Bento in App Store]

I love the quail egg Eva, and overall this is really, really incredible as an exercise in food ornamentation by bento maker extraordinaire AnnaTheRed. But if I were a kid and opened this up at lunchtime, I would be more worried about my mother’s rapidly intensifying case of the crazies than about how I should approach Wall-e’s omelet torso with my fork. There are many more masterworks at Anna’s own site: [AnnaTheRed, Flickr via Kottke]

I think it’s one of the few places that they they even try to make the lunches super-cute (check out mini-Bashcraft’s Pokemon bento @ Kotaku). But just like the actual non-tasty plastic version you play games on, the sign on this bento box Nintendo DS made out of rice says it’s sold out. Sad.
