Canon Updates HD Palmcorders With HF11, HG21 Versions

Posted by Kit Eaton at 6:03 PM on July 22, 2008

Canon's AVCHD HF10 camcorder got an excellent reception earlier this year, and now Canon have tweaked it slightly into the upcoming HF11 version. The most important tweaks are doubling the internal storage from 16GB to 32GB and the addition of a 24Mbps high quality MXP imaging mode. Otherwise, most features of the camera remain the same. Similar tweaks have been made to last year's HG10 HDD camera, adding in the 24Mbps shooting mode, a 120GB drive and now allowing movies to be saved onto SD card whereas before it was limited to still imagery. Both cameras will be available in August for US$1,300. [AVWatch]

Panasonic's New HD Camcorders World's First With 3-MOS Sensors

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 6:33 PM on June 18, 2008

Back in January we showed the Panasonic HDC-SD9 camcorder, which has a 3-CCD sensor, but the HDC-SD100 and HDC-HS100 announced today have a spanky new MOS system. This makes them the world's first AVCHD camcorders with "3MOS," which has double the light-receiving area of the CCD version, better for low-light shooting. The HS100 model records to SD card and its 60GB HDD, while the SD100 just saves to SD but both have full HD resolution, a new Leica lens and optical image stabilisation. Available in September for US$1,299.95 for the HS100 and US$1,099.95 for the HDC-HS100. Read on for the full press release.

JVC Expands Everio Range, Including World's First 50-Hour AVCHD Camcorder

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 6:37 PM on June 16, 2008

Earlier this year, JVC fired out the first HDD palmcorder to output video in 1080p, and now it has expanded the product line with the GZ-HD30, HD40 and HD10. It's a significant revamp, since the new cams use a completely new CMOS sensor, replacing the previous 3-CCD system. The HD40 has a 120GB 1.8-inch hard drive, versus the slimmer HD30's 80GB (making it the world's smallest 80GB palmcorder). Both these high-end models record in AVCHD and MPEG2 at full HD resolution, and the HD40 can squeeze in about 50 hours of AVCHD at this res. The lower-end HD10 model can only shoot in AVCHD and has a 40GB hard drive. Full press release below the gallery.

Sony HDR-SR12 Gets Reviewed (Verdict: It's a Winner)

Posted by Sean Fallon at 12:15 PM on April 1, 2008

According to Camcorder Info, Sony's HDR-SR12 is continuing to push the AVCHD format forward as a viable successor to HDV. It is, by far, the best Sony HDD camcorder on the market—and with 120GB under the hood, it is unmatched in the AVCHD category in terms of capacity. As far as performance is concerned, the SR12 held its own against even the intimidating Canon VIxza HF10, with only a slight inferiority in picture sharpness. They also noted that Sony's Exmor CMOS sensor and Bionz processor has improved in leaps and bounds over their top HDV camcorder, the HDR-HD9.

Canon Vixa HF10 Camcorder Reviewed (Verdict: Best AVCHD to Date)

Posted by Sean Fallon at 11:30 AM on March 12, 2008

If you have been waiting for a camcorder that gets AVCHD right, the folks at Camcorder Info have some good news. According to their recent review, The Canon Vixia HF10 may have finally brought the format into its own. When compared to an HDV camcorder, the quality of the HF10's images (artifacts, sharpness, colour, low-light performance) were generally as good, and in some instances maybe even better than its tape laden counterpart. It isn't a perfect device by any means, but it just may be the first great flash memory HD camcorder. Hit the link for the full review. [Camcorder Info and Canon]

Panasonic AG-HMC150 Shoots on SDHC

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 1:30 PM on February 17, 2008

After nearly six years, Panasonic is finally releasing a true HD successor to the popular but aging AG-DVX100. The US$6000 AG-HMC150 shares triple CCDs, optical image stabilisation, and audio capability with the DVX100, but adds a variety of HD formats including 1080/60i, 1080/30p, and 1080/24p. Panasonic has confirmed a basic 13Mbps recording mode but hasn't given a firm number for the "enhanced mode" for "higher-level use." Hopefully it will be closer to the AVCHD maximum 24Mbps and show what the format is really capable of. It'll use the same SDHC cards you'd use in a basic point-and-shoot. Jump for the press release.

Apple Rolls Out Redesigned iMovie 08

Posted by Seamus Byrne at 4:49 AM on August 8, 2007

imovie08xx.jpgSteve Jobs announced an updated version of the video editing application iMovie to go along with iLife '08. Calling it "a completely new way of editing video," the Apple CEO called it "startlingly better." Jobs says it's designed to be able to put together a movie in 30 minutes. It has a completely new user interface, too. It first shows up with a new star icon. It holds all of your video applications in one library, working very much like iPhoto. It now supports the newest HD camcorders that use the AVCHD codec, as well as HDV and DV cams. It offers easier scrubbing of clips, as well as as one-click sharing to YouTube. iMovie is included as part of the iLife '08 package, selling for $79 or included free with each new Mac.

Canon HG10 is World's Smallest Hard Disk-Based HD Camcorder

Posted by Seamus Byrne at 12:00 AM on August 2, 2007

HG10_front.jpgCanon jumped into the hard disk camcorder market today with its HG10, the company's first high-definition hard drive camcorder and the world's smallest, weighing 19.92 ounces with the battery inside. That 40GB hard disk gives you 5.5 hours of AVCHD recording at its highest quality setting, compressing the video at 15Mbps. If our sneak preview of this camcorder is any indication, that's going to result in some sweet-looking high definition footage. Here are our impressions.

Canon iVIS HG10 Has 40GB Hard Drive but Falls Short on High Definition

Posted by Seamus Byrne at 10:57 PM on August 1, 2007

canon-hg10.jpgThe Canon iVIS HG10 3CCD can record five-and-a-half hours of top banana quality video action on its 40GB hard drive. Unfortunately, the format is limited to a sad 1,440 x 1,080, (1080i) according to Canon's own specifications page, and the included battery will only give you one hour of actual recording time without using the LCD screen. And there is even more bad news.

AU: 'Sad' is a bit harsh, there. 1440x1080 is standard HDV spec and AVCHD also has this ratio as most typical, with wide pixels for a 1920x1080 finish. Not perfect, but it is in common use right now, so it isn't all that sad... unless all such cameras are sad... which they may well be... pining for Full HD.
