If you’re looking for an iPhone clone with the potential of actually being usable, the LG Arena looks like it might actually deliver a decent experience. And according to the press release LG Australia just sent out, it will deliver that experience as soon as next month.

LG will announce more specifics about ARENA and its features along with some surprises during a press conference at the Mobile World Congress. LG Mobile Australia will launch ARENA and provide further information to local media in March 2009.

Hopefully they give us more information before they launch the phone, but either way a March 2009 launch is a much better outcome for Australia than we typically receive from most companies. We’ll keep you posted when we hear any more…

ARENA, LG’s Fully Loaded Flagship Handset Featuring 3D S-Class UI, Coming To Australia

Sydney, Australia, February 16, 2009 – LG Electronics, a worldwide technology and design leader in mobile communications, announced today its new flagship mobile phone for 2009, LG ARENA (LG-KM900) will be launched in Australia. This fully loaded multimedia phone with LG’s innovative and dynamic 3D S-Class User Interface will be on hand at the Mobile World Congress 2009 in Barcelona before making its way to Australia.

LG ARENA’s groundbreaking 3D S-Class UI was specifically designed to be a more fun and engaging gateway to an amazing multimedia environment. A cube-based layout provides four customizable home screens for direct access to all features. Music, movies, pictures and more are within reach, thanks to intuitive, touch-based 3D menus. The rich 3D graphics give S-Class a life-like look that makes it natural and easy to navigate.

“The direct, intuitive and dynamic S-Class UI will be unlike anything that has appeared on a mobile phone before. With rich 3D graphics, touch sensitivity and exciting multimedia capabilities, it will truly make ARENA a fully loaded multimedia phone,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. LG ARENA will feature audio and video technologies never before seen on a mobile phone. LG took great effort to ensure that its 2009 flagship delivers an exhilarating multimedia experience, including features aided by Dolby and DivX technologies. LG ARENA will also include enhanced internet connectivity with HSDPA 7.2 networks, Wi-Fi, A-GPS and far more.

LG will announce more specifics about ARENA and its features along with some surprises during a press conference at the Mobile World Congress. LG Mobile Australia will launch ARENA and provide further information to local media in March 2009.

We teased the LG KM900 about unabashedly copying the iPhone earlier this month, but maybe we should scale that back a bit. New info leads me to believe the interface is more SUSE than Apple.

Sure, those incredibly similar menu icons are still there at the bottom, but that spinning cube is more Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop than iPhone. Novell’s been spinning their Linux desktop OS like a cube-shaped top for years, and this S-Class cube interface from LG reminded me of it today.

Says LG of their cube:

A cube-based layout provides four customisable home screens for direct access to all features. Music, movies, pictures and more are within reach, thanks to intuitive, touch-based 3D menus. The rich 3D graphics give S-Class a life-like look that makes it natural and easy to navigate.

Of course, that spinning, natural and “easy to navigate” 3D cube might not perform quite that way when the phone is loaded up with apps, music and other memory-hogging info, but we’ll know for sure when this guy officially launches at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on February 16.

What kind of amenities and features will the stadiums have to cater to our needs as fans? PopSci has investigated some of the up-and-coming technologies that we can expect to find in the stadium of tomorrow and compiled all of these innovations into a composite that includes the best design and technology features from a dozen cutting-edge stadium plans.

The Frankenstein stadium of the future is composed of some technology that we have already heard about–like new Cowboys stadium and its gigantic video screen. However, you may not have come across plans for a single-piece steel roof that makes taunts more audible to opposing players in Liverpool F.C.’s new stadium, or the wireless screens set to be built in Oakland’s new Cisco field. The interactive screens will allow visitors to order food, pull up stats, and even find the shortest bathroom lines from the comfort of their seat. There are also plans that make stadiums greener, cooler, and more flexible when it comes to configurations. Check out PopSci for more info. [PopSci]

Speedo’s controversial LZR Racer swimsuit spawned its first copycat this week, a prototype from Arena International that pushes the definition of tight-fitting fabric. With a green light for the LZR from swimming’s official body, and the Summer Olympics looming large on the horizon, I think it’s safe to say that the swimsuit arms race has officially begun.

Known as “doping on a hangar” and the “Speedo surfboard”, the LZR has hugged the bodies of 30 record-breaking swimmers since its introduction in February. Rivals complained about fairness, and the International Swimming Federation (aka FINA) scheduled a meeting with Speedo to discuss the seamless, ultrasonically bonded suit. The meeting went swimmingly, for Speedo. Not only did FINA dismiss rivals’ claims, they also turned around and endorsed the suit for future pro swimming events.

In response, Arena fired off a prototype super suit of its own, complete with plastic inserts and who knows what else. “A new era in the sport kicks off today,” said Christiano Portas, the head of Arena. “We can fight for ethics but we stood alone when it came to everyone saying that the word ‘fabric’ in the rules was just a generic term. Now we explore many other things.” My money is on one of these custom-built Columbian submersibles, how about yours?

Quake 3 Arena has somehow found itself ported to the iPhone. Details are thinner than my scalp is on hair, but the video clearly shows a networked game going on in full swing. You may be thinking this sounds semi-neat, but let me tell you this; the game uses the freaking accelerometer for direction control, whilst shooting is done simply by tapping on the touchscreen. Now, I’m off to collapse in a euphoric pile, you checkout the video and then do the same. There’s no word on the release yet, but hopefully it will show up somewhere once I am out of my aforementioned, euphoric pile state. We’ll keep you posted.
