While you and I were catching up on some much-needed sleep last night, Apple was busy rolling out an update to its Apple TV platform that apparently introduced the ability to buy full episodes of TV shows to watch directly on your television. I haven’t seen it though.

Ars got the official word from an Apple spokesperson: there will be no new software update for old AppleTVs. That means no sexy Netflix, though you’ll be able to keep on buying movies and TV shows instead of renting. [Ars]
Over at Lifehacker, Gus has taken a look at what the new Apple TV’s rental-only setup actually means for Australian consumers. To say the news isn’t that spectacular might be putting it mildly.
The Financial Times is reporting that Google is in talks with Hollywood studios to launch a global pay-per-view video service. It’s expected to expand YouTube’s offerings by the end of 2010.
Apple’s yearly event is “definitely happening”, according to AllThingsD, and mid-September is seeming like an increasingly likely time for that event to happen. Reading the tea leaves, it seems like iPod Touches and AppleTVs will be the focus.
According to an Engadget source – the same one that said the next AppleTV would be a $US99 unit with iPhone guts – Apple’s next TV device will be rebranded the iTV. And it will have apps, but it won’t play 1080p video.
The iPhone 3.0 version of the Remote app now supports Apple TV controls with gesturing, which should give you a lot more flexibility than the standard little Apple Remote you already have.
