Before she was a year old, Aimee Mullins had both legs amputated below the knee. Her family doctor said she’d never learn to walk. At the age of 19, she set world records in the 100m dash and long jump.

That was Aimee Mullins the athlete, running on early prototypes of now-commonplace carbon-fibre legs. Since the 1996 Paralympics, she’s worked as a fashion model, a speaker and an actress, while making her way into more sports and culture publications than we can count.

But what most bios may miss about Aimee, whom I had the pleasure to meet at TEDMED, is that she’s more than a jock or some sappy “never give up!!” Hallmark greeting card.

Standing between a slender 172cm and 185cm — depending on her particular mood — Aimee is that girl you knew in high school who was too pretty and popular for you but never felt it necessary to point these facts out. (Maybe because she’s a not-so-closeted geek who rarely misses the opportunity to make reference to sci-fi classics like 2001, Robocop and Terminator — especially when referencing herself.)

It’s our privilege to have Aimee guest editing this week, exploring where technology has and will take the human body. If she’s what it means to be “disabled”, then why are the “able-bodied” among us so jealous? [Image by Howard Schatz]

What are you waiting for?

The folks at iWorld are giving away a trio of Dexim iPhone peripherals:

Firstly, there’s the Dexim HD dock, which is the next generation of the Dexim AV dock we looked at back in July. Not only does it connect your iPhone or iPod Touch to your TV so you can watch your photos or video files on the big screen, but it outputs at 720i resolution, which is pretty close to HD. It’s charge your phone as well, which is always a welcome feature for an iPhone peripheral, if you know what I mean…

Secondly, there’s the Dexim P-Flip foldable power dock. It’s a portable rechargeable battery dock for your iPhone or iPod Touch, adding eight hours talk time, 15 hours video or 60 hours worth of music. You can plug the dock into your PC as well to charge and sync your device too.

Finally, the Dexim HD Adapter Cable, which is just like the HD dock except without the dock bit. It too will let you play back 720i video on your HDTV directly from your iPhone, and is a traveller’s ideal companion.

We’ve got one of each to give away. To enter, all you need to do is write a poem or rap in 25 words or less in the comments section of the original comp post here using the words Dexim, Power and iWorld.

It too will let you play back 720i video on your HDTV directly from your iPhone, and is a traveller’s ideal companion.

There’s one of each to win this week. To enter, all you need to do is write a poem or rap in 25 words or less in the comments section below using the words Dexim, Power and iWorld. Entries close Friday night at 5pm Sydney time.

It’s match day. Everything we’ve done before has been leading up to this moment. Socks are pulled up. Jerseys cleaned and pressed. Shorts are still short. We’re taking the field, singing the national anthem, jumping from foot to foot as the crowd cheers in anticipation. Inside, our stomachs are clenched like fists, waiting for that whistle to signal kickoff. And when it comes, we’ll be ready. Because this is Gizmodo’s tribute to all things sports.

There’s something quintessentially Australian about sport. Even for those among us whose biggest sporting achievements are winning a Grade 3 chess tournament, something about sports is ingrained in the national psyche. We’ve all played backyard cricket. We’ve all watched a grand final. We’ve all celebrated our team’s victory and mourned their losses. It’s as Aussie as barbecues and drinking beer.

So for Grand Final week—which started on Saturday with the AFL’s top two teams battling it out for supremacy and concludes next Sunday with the NRL’s final match of the season—we’ve decided to look at the tech behind our favourite sports. Expect to see posts on some of the most high-tech sports around, the best sports iPhone apps, the top sports video games, ludicrous fitness gadgets and heaps more.

So settle in, order a pizza, keep the beer fridge fully stocked and get ready for sports galore. The ref’s blown his whistle, and the match has begun…

Playing with balls is Gizmodo AU’s week-long look at the technology behind the sports we love, from the jerseys to the balls and everything in between. Go the Tahs!
