As far as I’m aware, this is the first time the Kindle will be available from a local retailer. Both versions of the graphite Kindle 3 are now up for pre-order: the 3G for $219, and Wi-Fi for $159 (shipping is free). That compares pretty well compared to getting it shipped from Amazon directly. Continuing its never-ending march to platform ubiquity, Kindle will officially be available on Windows Phone 7 – though maybe not in time for launch. So far Amazon’s just saying that the app will be available “later this year” and that it’ll come with some unique features, including personalised book recommendations on the home screen and the ability to suggest books to friends without leaving the app. Neat! Amazon’s own e-book reader won’t be able to play back video or audio embedded in e-books the way the iPod touch, iPhone, iPad and I’m presuming the Mac and PC versions can. But it probably doesn’t matter too much to Amazon, who stands to make a killing on the books themselves, anyhow. More »
