Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch, for the Space Traveller Who Has Everything

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 7:20 AM on August 19, 2008

The Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch designed by NASA back in the '70s puts your puny Earthwatch to shame. Its anodised aluminium body can withstand temperatures from -148 to +260° Celsius, and its sassy red exterior is sure to impress any ladyaliens you meet on your travels. There's no confirmed price, but with a limited run of less than 2,000, we're betting it won't come cheap. [Josh Spear via men.style.com]

'Biggest Military Hack of All Time' Was Done Over a 56k Connection

Posted by Adam Frucci at 6:30 AM on August 3, 2008

Gary McKinnon, the British hacker who broke into military computers looking for evidence of UFOs in the "biggest military hack of all time," did so using his home computer and a 56k modem. I think we just lost our rights to complain about not having Japan-fast broadband.

What the Hell is Going On in Potters Field?

Posted by Adam Frucci at 3:30 AM on July 20, 2008

These photos, taken from a Flickr set, show what appears to be some sort of crashed spacecraft in London's Potters Field. They offer no explanation as to what's going on over there across the pond. Do any of you know what this is? Movie shoot? Publicity stunt? Photoshoppery? Actual alien invasion? Let's hear your guesses, both educated and uneducated, in the comments. Update: It's an ad for a new car. Boo.

Help Save the Arecibo Observatory: ET Is Counting on You

Posted by Sean Fallon at 6:40 AM on July 8, 2008

The Arecibo Observatory has been plagued with budget problems for years now, but it appears that the future of the world's largest radio telescope is looking bleaker than ever with cuts looming that could shut down the project for good. That grim reality has prompted the guys behind SETI@home to call out to the public in a last ditch attempt to secure donations and support for the Senate bill and House resolution to continue funding. With our luck, E.T. will try and make contact the day the observatory goes offline, so hit the following link and show your support. [Seti@home]

Confirmed: Phoenix Finds Ice on Mars

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 11:30 AM on June 20, 2008

The Mars Phoenix just issued a highly official Twitter saying that some white, shiny stuff it was staring at has sublimated. In other words, it's definitely ice. The previous discovery of probable ice sent thousands of scientists and NASA fans into violent discovery-gasms, but until the Phoenix team was to observe sublimation, which is when ice skips the liquid state and just evaporates, they couldn't be sure.

Real-Size Alien Statue Guaranteed to Kill You at Night

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 9:44 PM on June 19, 2008

Standing 2.3 metres high, this ultra-realistic alien statue made of steel, resin and rigid foam--with transparent dental acrylic lips—is designed to kill everyone who tries to break into your house with the sheer power of pure fear. The only bad this is that, most probably, it will also kill you when you go to the fridge in the middle of the night. As you can see in the nine-image gallery, the detail is amazing.

Boeing Working on Real-Life Colonial Marines Dropship

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 12:30 AM on June 13, 2008

The US Air Force wants a new cargo aircraft, a pressurised aeroplane capable of carrying 30,000 kilos for 1,500 nautical miles without refueling. They call it the Speed Agile Concept Demonstrator—it's supposed to travel at a minimum Mach .8 at 30,000-feet—but they may as well have called it the UD-4L Dropship, because it looks like the Colonial Marines' Cheyenne in Aliens. Boeing is going to get a mere US$7.5M to work on it to get the technology ready for 2010—which doesn't mean having the aeroplane by then, just the pretty drawings for us to post about. Alien Video Uncovered: Real or Fake?

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 4:50 AM on May 31, 2008

As you probably know, some guy claimed he had definitive proof of the existence of aliens. Apparently, this video is that proof. Proof that aliens exist (and that they are just a bunch of perverted Peeping Toms.) I mean, they haven't returned our calls yet, and someone actually thinks they are snooping through our home windows on foot? Do you think this is real or more fake than alien sex doll? [Thanks Brent]

Video of Real, Live Aliens to Be Shown to Press Tomorrow by This Totally Sane Guy

Posted by Adam Frucci at 1:40 AM on May 30, 2008

Apparently, a video showing real, live space aliens will be shown to the media on Friday by totally not-crazy Jeff Peckman. The Denver resident is pushing to create an Extraterrestrial Affairs Commission to deal with interacting with the interstellar visitors that he claims are all over the place. Think the video might be a fake? You wish! It was totally verified by an instructor at the Colorado Film School, an institution that is apparently the expert in videos of aliens.
