It’s no secret that early Google TV devices had potential but pretty much bombed. But the renewed enthusiasm we saw from numerous vendors at CES – including LG, Sony and Samsung plus chipmakers Qualcomm and Marvell – suggests that Google TV 2.0 devices (complete with Android Market access to made-for-TV apps) might finally be worth looking out for.
There were a handful of new home automation solutions at CES this year, including Belkin’s WeMo, which was designed to be easy to install and use. But it’s still nowhere near as simple as ZMote’s new Bluetooth Smart Cord.
Ion Audio definitely had a busy CES. Besides launching iCade Mobile — which adds eight buttons and a D-Pad to your iPhone — they also showcased upcoming instrument learning rigs. Piano Studio is a 61-note keyboard with lighted keys showing you how to play, while Drum Master is a full-size electronic drum kit with six velocity-sensitive lighted pads and cymbals. Hidden far behind the glamorous main halls at CES is the International Exhibit Hall – home to vast rows of Chinese inventors. I love these guys. As a writer, you can find some real gems…both unseen and bizarre (like the butt massager in this quick video). But maybe I’m wrong. Maybe it’s for your feet. I actually have no bloody clue. Please tell me what the hell this is!

The Transformer Prime hits Australian stores this week, loaded with Ice Cream Sandwich. But can it play Skyrim? Yes, apparently, via PC to tablet streaming using Splashtop THD — a new and improved (but not yet available) version that Asus and Nvidia teamed up to demo at CES.
CES saw the release of a few new additions to the extreme action cam genre, but the theme this year was buit-in Wi-Fi letting jackasses and thrill-seekers stream their adventures. Including Liquid Image’s new Ego which does full HD.
Devices like the Windows Surface have been in development for what feels like an age, and delivered very little. Now 3M Touch Systems is showing off a 46-inch prototype touchscreen table at CES that allows up to 60 touch points, and sounds like it might actually be useful.
The iPad offers great promise in terms of music making, and I’m not talking about karaoke or strange virtual guitar concepts: artists like Gorrilaz have managed to record full songs using them. Now you can, too, thanks to Griffin.
Well that about does it for CES. We managed to escape Las Vegas with our lives, most of our belongings, and almost none of our dignity intact. But for all our bellyaching, CES is fun. We saw some amazing things out in the desert this year. Here’s a quick rundown of the best:
