3 Claims Big Win for Cricket TV on Mobiles

11:52AM Nathan Taylor | If telco 3 is to be believed, we’ve turned into a nation mad on mobile TV. It sent out a release this week claiming that over the summer its customers tuned in over 1.2 million times to watch Cricket TV, its direct-to-mobiles cricket programming. On the surface of it, it looks like pretty good news for television broadcasting to mobiles, except for the weasel-wording that makes us wonder how many people really did watch it.      More »

Design Competition Brings Artistic Elegance to Mobile Phone Concepts

1:00PM Haroon Malik | Those arty chaps at the Royal College of Art have created some great looking mobile phone concepts. The designs were put together for a competition that was sponsored by the cellular network 3. The runners-up included the Vase phone, which begins as an empty “vessel,” but has features added to it gradually, according to the user’s needs. The Teiko cellphone was designed for children, incorporating GPS for parental tracking and a rugged general construction. More »

Samsung’s Thin 3-Megapixel SCH-u900 FlipShot Camera Phone Hits Verizon

12:30AM Wilson Rothman | Last time you saw the SCH-u900, it was fugly. Now, gussied up and ready for the holidays, the u900 makes its Verizon Wireless debut in red and black with a new nickname, the FlipShot. The 3.0-megapixel camphone replaces the now defunct a990 with a thinner body and a new rounded-edge look. It’s got what you’d expect from a high-end feature phone: EV-DO, GPS with VZ Navigator, and Bluetooth—stereo audio, dial-up networking, serial port and object push for vCard, plus basic print and image profiles. The black version starts selling on Verizon’s website today, while the seductive red model will only be available at Best Buy, beginning 11/26. Total cost for this baby will be $200, after you sign your life away for one-fifth of a decade, of course. [Verizon Wireless] More »

Spaceflight Training with Lord British for Just $3,000,000

5:30AM Jesus Diaz | If you have a spare $US3,000,000 lying around, Space Adventures wants you to know that you, the public, can now apply to “to train as a private space explorer alongside” Richard Garriott, the mighty Lord British, developer of Ultima, founder of Origin and defeater of the Saxons. All without wearing a gnome suit or an armour. The catch: Richard is going to the International Space Station next year and you, my friend, you are not going even if you have the money. The three million dollars will only pay for your training as a back-up member, and the money “can be credited in-full toward a future orbital or lunar spaceflight mission.” Not interested? Maybe Lord British’s words will help: More »

Sidekick Slide Design Flaw Causes Resets?

7:45AM Jason Chen | Boy Genius reports that Sidekick Slide users are getting sudden restarts after flippign the screen up and down a few times. The cause? Apparently a build flaw that has too big of a gap between the contacts for the battery and the connector on the phone. Telstra, an Australian company, seems to be having similar problems on their version of the Motorola device called the Hiptop Slide. A temporary solution is to shove a piece of paper—maybe a business card—between the wall and the battery. This happening to any of you? [Boy Genius] More »
