Posted by Jason Chen at 11:56 AM on August 19, 2008

Apple's tacking on an addition 60 days to the 30 days it already doled out to MobileMe subscribers, which means you've got an entire three months extra to wait out the issues you've been having. Apple sent out these emails today to MobileMe subscribers, but if you're one of the ones with MobileMe mail snags, you might not have gotten it. Well you've seen it now! Apple has some more clarifications in case you're not sure if you qualify. [Apple]

Apple Admits MobileMe Snags, Gives Free 30-Day Extension

Posted by Kit Eaton at 11:34 PM on July 16, 2008

Apple's MobileMe service hit so many snags during its launch period that Apple have just issued an email apology to members. Saying "The transition from .Mac to MobileMe was a lot rockier than we had hoped," Apple's apologising with a 30-day membership extension for free to anyone who was a .Mac member with an active account as of July 9, 2008 and new MobileMe members who created accounts on or before July 15, 7:00 PM PDT. Details can be found on the Apple support page here. The email also apologises for the controversy over the speediness of "push" services, and says that Apple's not using the term until it really is "near-instant on PCs and Macs, too."

MobileMe Website is Up, One Day of Awkwardness Late

Posted by Kit Eaton at 7:31 PM on July 11, 2008

So we showed it to you briefly yesterday, but then MobileMe turned around and seemed to bite the Apple that made it, and has been unavailable until just now. Can we assume more technical hitches than its developers had anticipated? Yes, I think we can, particularly given Apple's "it's taking longer than expected" error message. But now it's up, and since the iPhone has already been on sale in some places for nearly a whole day, that can only be good news. Update: There's a getting started tour, which didn't appear to be there yesterday. Everything else works as anticipated. [Me.com]

MobileMe Is Up!

Posted by Wilson Rothman at 9:03 PM on July 10, 2008

Apple's MobileMe, the bigger/better/more version of .Mac, just went live, sort of. We logged in and poked around, but then the site went dead and the server started redirecting us back to the old "coming soon" page. Here's what we saw before things went away:

MobileMe Setup in iPhone OS 2.0 Video

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 1:45 AM on July 9, 2008

We already knew that MobileMe e-mail services are now fully active and accessible through any desktop mail client. This morning I tried to set up MobileMe in my iPhone with OS 2.0 and I discovered that the calendar, bookmarks, and contacts all synchronized fine, even while push synching--the ability of MobileMe to make changes to your iPhone over the air as they happen--is not active yet.

Me.com Could Be Apple's Rebranded .Mac Mobile Me Site

Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 8:00 AM on June 2, 2008

How's this for an Apple coup? On Friday Mark reported that Apple could be positioning .Mac for a serious overhaul, which was known in rumour mill circles at the time as Mobile Me. Today we received another update as MacRumors discovered that the Netcraft page for Me.com lists Kenneth Eddings, the official technical contact for many Apple domain names, as the DNS admin for the site.

.Mac Getting a New Name?

Posted by Mark Wilson at 10:38 PM on May 30, 2008

Aside from the obvious 3G iPhone rumour floating around this year's WWDC, the other, quieter rumour has been that Apple will be revamping .Mac in a major way. Now one code enthusiast thinks he's found some evidence in a pile of 10.5.3 strings that points to a name change (which we think points to a revamp). He explains:

.Mac Push Email Coming To iPhones

Posted by Mark Wilson at 12:30 AM on May 9, 2008

According to what look to be leaked screens of the upcoming iPhone firmware, .Mac push email could be coming to the iPhone. A new "Fetch new data" button will lead to the list of email accounts (in the picture here). Notice that some are listed as "fetch" while .Mac is listed as "push." And while we realise that even the hardcore Apple fanbase tends to steer clear of .Mac, there are bound to be like, 5 or 6 people who are just thrilled. [TUAW]

Microsoft's Mesh Video and Screens: File Sync and Sharing Was Never So Complicated

Posted by Brian Lam at 10:48 AM on April 24, 2008

Microsoft's Mesh seems full of promise, even if you can't find a jargon free definition of it anywhere, even Microsoft: All your devices working together; Access from Anywhere, Simple to Share; Stay Informed; Protection You Know. Let's stick with the simple here and now: It's online file syncing, sharing, and storage for many devices. And Windows' existing remote desktop software is thrown in. At its best, Mesh should be as simple as the diagram above implies, but other screenshots and the 25 minute tour video below show it to be much more complicated. Why is this the case when file sharing and sync has had the potential to be transparent and automated as on .Mac and Zonbu's systems?
