Samsung's i8510 Boasts Almost Everything, Plus An 8 Megapixel Camera

Posted by Matt Hickey at 12:00 PM on July 24, 2008

Samsung has a new slider on the market in Europe and we're hoping it finds its way over here. The i8510 is a S60-powered GSM phone with very fast 3G speeds and Wi-Fi, as well as GPS. What makes this high-end phone lust-worthy, though, is the 8 Megapixel multifunction camera with Xenon flash that can record video at up to 120 frames per second. It also has image stabilisation and face recognition as well as other features. Couple that with Bluetooth 2 and 16GB of internal flash storage and you've got a serious, slim phone for T-Mobile users. And it looks really nice, too. [Symbian Guru]

iPhone 3G Selling Twice as Fast as Original

Posted by Matt Buchanan at 7:40 AM on July 24, 2008

The one major bit out of AT&T's quarterly earnings call is that the iPhone 3G is selling twice as fast as the original iPhone did last summer--in case the unending squiggles of people trailing out of Apple Stores and AT&T shops didn't tip you off. They didn't actually say how many were sold, but we know that worldwide Apple sold a million of them as of nine days ago, just three days after launch. Of course, the hot US$199 price--undoubtedly responsible for the phone's brief life on shelves--means AT&T won't actually make money off of it until 2010. You know, when we're on our fourth-gen iPhone. [Alley Insider]

First BlackBerry Kickstart 8220 Impressions (Verdict: Solid Hardware)

Posted by Mark Wilson at 4:55 AM on July 24, 2008

The kids over at CrackBerry got their hands on the new Blackberry Kickstart 8220--the first flip phone BlackBerry. And while they have yet to publish a complete review, CrackBerry definitely likes the hardware, claiming that RIM has not cheapened the build quality for its casual audience. But how does it match up to the BlackBerry Pearl? Pretty well, they claim.

Senator Conroy Hearts The iPhone 3G

Australian Post Posted by Nick Broughall at 12:39 PM on July 23, 2008

Apologies for the god-awful photoshop above (if you want better, send it through to me!) but ZDnet are reporting that Communications Minister Stephen Conroy is lusting after his very own iPhone 3G.

Talking with the audience at Communications Consumer Dialogue 2008 yesterday morning, he apparently announced:
"The sexy gadget at the moment is the iPhone. I'm looking forward to getting one."
Although there's no mention of which carrier he plans on giving his iPhone allegiance to, the fact that the Senator considers anything sexy places him in higher regard in Gizmodo's book than the previous Comms minister.

In other news, ZDnet says he's also stoked that the ACCC has already stepped up to the plate with its announcement that you should be careful when it comes to mobile data, as it means he has less work to do. Good man!

Nokia E71 to Hit Flagship Stores This Week

Posted by Kit Eaton at 12:15 AM on July 23, 2008

We'd previously suggested a May 8th date for the much-anticipated Nokia E71 mobile phone, but it looks like the actual US launch is about to happen. Rumours are that Nokia's Flagship Store in Chicago has already got its first shipment, and has been contacting customers on the waiting list. The dual band WCDMA phone is apparently to be unveiled at a launch party this Thursday. So if you're on a list, for US$480 you could be clutching the QWERTY keypad, GPS-enabled device in just 48 hours. [BoyGeniusReport]

Sony Pushes Out Three New Walkman Phones, the W302, W902 and W595

Posted by Kit Eaton at 7:09 PM on July 22, 2008

It's the third birthday of Sony Ericsson's Walkman phone label, and to celebrate it's launching three new music-based mobile phones. The W302 and W902 (left, centre in the image) are both candybar handsets, with the 302 having an FM radio, and 2-megapixel cam, and the 902 with a 5-megapixel cam and apparently matching the high audio quality of the W980 phone. The W595 is a slide phone with built-in stereo speakers so users can "share sounds with their friends" (read: annoy passers-by with irritating tunes) but it also has twin jacks so you can share music privately. All four phones are quad-band GSM, have "shake control," come in a selection of colours and will hit the streets at the end of the year. Press release below, which also details some new accessories like wireless portable speakers.
