Building A NAS? Skip The Performance Drives

5:00AM Chris Jacob | A while ago I was considering putting low-powered 5400 RPM drives into a NAS. I was worried about performance, but Tom’s Hardware shows us that drive speed isn’t the bottleneck, and how slower drives can even beat faster ones. More »

Gigabyte BIOS Update Fixes iPhone Syncing Issues

1:00AM Chris Jacob | Gigabyte’s been listening to all of the iPhone syncing issues from motherboard owners using Intel’s P55 chipset. They’ve put out a beta BIOS that addresses the problem. Unfortunately, that doesn’t help all the Asus and MSI users who are having the same troubles, but hopefully now that Gigabyte has set an example the others will follow. More »

Intel Promises To Stop Its Firmware Bricking SSDs

11:00AM Rosa Golijan | A few weeks ago, Intel pulled a firmware update the day after it came out because many users running 64-bit Windows 7 found that it bricked their SSDs. Whoops. The good news though is that Intel has acknowledged and replicated the bug, and is working on a fix. The bad news? There’s no timeline for when the fix will come out. [Reg Hardware]

Samsung’s New Flash Memory Chips Will Cause Gadget Shrinkage

5:00AM Rosa Golijan | With a thickness of only 0.6mm, Samsung’s newest NAND chips are practically anorexic, but for once that’s a good thing. Thinner chips like these could bring smaller gadgets and hopefully also lead to lower SSD prices. More »

3:19AM Mark Wilson | Bad news: Nvidia has confirmed Intel’s stance on USB 3.0 — no Intel chipsets will support the new standard until 2011. Short of Intel stating something different, USB 3.0 probably won’t hit mass consumption until then. Is there any hope? More »

Toshy’s New Hard Drives Look Pretty Swish

4:16PM Nick Broughall | I like the design on Toshiba’s new portable hard drives. It may not be revolutionary, but there’s something about the black and red swirl on the 640GB version that makes me think of throat lozenges. Tasty throat lozenges. More »

Via Nano 3000 Wants To Rip Out The Eyes Of The Intel Atom

3:19AM Mark Wilson | Via’s latest nano processor, the 3000, has gone official today for a release in early 2010 in speeds ranging between 1-2GHz. The promise? Twenty per cent lower power consumption than old Vias and 1080p playback. Intel’s gotten cocky enough in the space that we don’t mind the competition one bit. More »

The NSA To Store A YOTTABYTE Of Your Personal Data

1:40AM Mark Wilson | In Utah, the National Security Agency is building a $US2 billion storage facility that will house and analyse all forms of electronic communication…a potential yottabyte of everyone’s (formerly) personal data. So how big is a yottabyte? CrunchGear puts it well…+ More »
